We found Thomas in a private care facility two hours outside Portland.
Richard had not hidden him in another country.
He had hidden him close enough to visit.
The facility was privately funded.
Its largest donor was Vance Holdings.
Denise stared at the records.
"Of course."
Julian's face hardened.
"They paid for his care."
"Yes."
"Why keep him alive?"
"Because he was useful."
I couldn't speak.
We entered the facility with investigators.
A nurse led us down a quiet corridor.
At the end was a small room.
The door stood open.
An elderly man sat near the window.
His hair was white.
His body was thin.
But when he turned toward me, I knew.
There are some faces the body remembers before the mind does.
I stopped.
He stared at me.
His eyes filled with tears.
"Vivian."
I covered my mouth.
He knew my name.
"How?"
He smiled sadly.
"Your mother showed me your photograph."
I stepped inside.
"My father?"
He nodded.
"I'm Thomas."
I began crying.
He reached for my hand.
I took it.
His fingers were cold.
"I'm sorry."
"For what?"
"For not being there."
I sat beside him.
"Mother told me you died."
"I was supposed to."
"What does that mean?"
Thomas looked toward the door.
"Did you come alone?"
"No."
He relaxed slightly.
"Then maybe it's finally safe."
Julian entered.
Thomas looked at him.
His expression changed.
"You found Daniel."
Julian froze.
"Yes."
Thomas smiled.
"Margaret always said you would."
Julian moved closer.
"My name is Julian."
"I know."
Thomas studied him.
"But Daniel is who you are."
Julian swallowed.
"Tell me what happened."
Thomas looked at me.
"Your mother wanted to tell you everything."
"Why didn't she?"
"Because the Vances were watching."
"Since when?"
"Before you were born."
I closed my eyes.
Thomas continued.
"Sarah discovered the first records."
"The baby exchange."
"Yes."
"Then she told you."
"She told me everything."
"What happened to her?"
Thomas looked down.
"They followed her."
"Did they kill her?"
"I can't prove it."
"But you believe they did."
"Yes."
I tightened my grip on his hand.
"What about you?"
"They tried to kill me too."
My breath caught.
"When?"
"After I gave Margaret the ledger."
"How did you survive?"
"I disappeared."
"Then why was there a death certificate?"
"Because Margaret needed the Vances to believe I was dead."
I stared at him.
"She knew you were alive."
"Yes."
"Why didn't she tell me?"
"Because if they knew I was alive, they would search for you."
I looked at Julian.
The entire pattern was finally clear.
My mother had protected Thomas.
Thomas had protected Margaret.
Margaret had protected me.
And I had unknowingly married the very child the Vances had stolen.
Thomas looked at my son.
"Is that your baby?"
"Yes."
He smiled.
"Bring him here."
I placed the baby gently in his arms.
Thomas looked at his face.
Then he began to cry.
"Daniel's eyes."
Julian stood beside him.
"He has my eyes."
Thomas shook his head.
"Your eyes belonged to Daniel first."
Julian smiled sadly.
"Then maybe I finally understand."
Thomas looked at him.
"You have something your grandfather never had."
"What?"
"A choice."
Julian looked at his son.
"I know."
Thomas handed the baby back.
Then he looked at me.
"There's one thing your mother never told you."
"What?"
"She didn't adopt you simply to protect you."
I frowned.
"Then why?"
"Because she needed to create a legal barrier."
"Between me and the Vances."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because Thomas Carter was named in the original trust as an independent witness."
I looked at him.
"Not a beneficiary."
"No."
"A witness."
"Exactly."
"Then why would my status matter?"
"Because the trust contained a succession clause."
He paused.
"If the original witness died without a surviving descendant, the Vance family could control the evidence."
I stared.
"But I survived."
"Yes."
"And that's why they wanted me."
"Yes."
My mother had not simply hidden me.
She had made me legally independent of the Vance family.
She had made sure they couldn't claim me.
Thomas reached beneath his blanket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
"Your mother wanted you to have this when the time came."
I took it.
The handwriting was hers.
Again.
I opened it.
Vivian,
If you are reading this, Thomas has survived long enough to tell you the truth.
Trust him.
Trust Julian only if he chooses his son over the Vance name.
And trust yourself most of all.
My eyes blurred.
The next page contained instructions.
Take the ledger to federal investigators.
Do not negotiate with Richard Vance.
Do not accept money.
Do not allow the Vances to settle privately.
I looked at Thomas.
"Why?"
"Because they will offer you everything."
"Why?"
"Because they know what happens if the evidence becomes public."
"What happens?"
"The trust collapses."
"And the company?"
"Possibly."
Julian looked at me.
"Let it."
Thomas smiled.
"That's what Margaret wanted to hear."
I looked at Julian.
"You knew."
He shook his head.
"I didn't."
Thomas nodded.
"Then you're different from them."
A noise came from the hallway.
Everyone froze.
The door opened.
An investigator stepped inside.
"Mr. Carter?"
Thomas looked up.
"Yes?"
"We need to move you."
"Why?"
"We've received information that someone may be coming."
Denise immediately stood.
"Who?"
"We don't know."
Julian took my hand.
"Let's go."
But Thomas grabbed my wrist.
"Wait."
He looked at me.
"There's one more thing."
"What?"
"Richard didn't find you by accident."
"What do you mean?"
"He has been tracking you since the day you married Julian."
I felt sick.
"Why?"
"Because he realized something your grandfather didn't."
"What?"
Thomas looked at my son.
"Your child could legally inherit the original trust."
I stared.
"But I thought Julian was the heir."
"Julian was the false heir."
"Then my son?"
"Your son is the biological descendant of Daniel Hale."
Dr. Hale stepped forward.
Thomas nodded at him.
"And Daniel was the original named heir."
Julian understood.
"So my son is the heir."
"Potentially."
"But the Vance family can't claim him."
"No."
"Because the trust was fraudulent."
"Exactly."
I held my son tighter.
Richard had not been trying to take my baby simply because of money.
He was trying to prevent the original succession clause from being enforced.
Thomas looked at me.
"Your son doesn't belong to the Vances."
I nodded.
"He belongs to himself."
Thomas smiled.
"That's what Margaret wanted."
Then his expression changed.
He looked toward the window.
A black vehicle had stopped outside.
Thomas whispered one word.
"Richard."
