PART 10 – Returning to Fort Bragg Forced Me to Walk Through the Place That Had Shaped My Life, While My Mother Finally Told Me Why She Left

We flew to North Carolina before sunrise.

The military transport was quiet.

Jason slept across from me with his shoulder bandaged. Alvarez sat beside him, watching the door.

My mother sat alone near the rear.

I hadn't spoken to her for almost an hour.

There were too many questions.

Eventually, she looked up.

“You're angry.”

“Yes.”

“You have every right.”

I stared through the small window.

Below us, clouds stretched across the morning sky.

“Why did you leave me?”

She took a breath.

“I was captured.”

“I know.”

“I escaped.”

“I know.”

“You don't know what happened afterward.”

“Then tell me.”

She folded her hands.

“The night they told you I died, I had been trying to recover the original ledger.”

“The one we have?”

“No. There was another.”

I turned.

“Another ledger?”

“Yes.”

“What happened to it?”

“My sister took it.”

My aunt.

“She was working with the organization by then?”

“She believed she was.”

I frowned.

“She believed?”

“She thought she could control it from inside.”

My mother looked down.

“She was wrong.”

“What happened to her?”

“She became the person we feared.”

I remembered the woman at the warehouse.

Calm.

Certain.

“You still love her.”

My mother looked at me.

“She is my sister.”

“That wasn't my question.”

Silence.

Finally she said, “Yes.”

I looked away.

“That's why you couldn't stop her.”

“No.”

She swallowed.

“That's why I spent twenty-six years trying.”

The plane descended.

Fort Bragg appeared beneath us.

The sight of it made my chest tighten.

I had been stationed there when I was young.

I had learned how to lead there.

I had made mistakes there.

I had lost friends there.

And now I knew someone had been watching me from inside those same buildings.

We landed on a restricted strip.

Federal investigators were already waiting.

A colonel approached me.

“Major Hale.”

“Colonel.”

“We have secured your office.”

“Why?”

“We found evidence someone had entered it overnight.”

My mother looked at me.

“What did they take?”

The colonel shook his head.

“Nothing.”

That was worse.

I followed him inside.

My office looked untouched.

Desk.

Computer.

Awards.

Photographs.

Then I noticed something.

My old deployment photograph was missing.

The one taken after the ambush.

I had always hated that photograph.

I was smiling in it.

My lieutenant was standing beside me.

He had died three days later.

I stared at the empty frame.

“Why would they take this?”

My mother approached.

“Because someone wants you to remember.”

“Remember what?”

“The ambush wasn't the first time you were targeted.”

She looked toward the wall.

“Your first assignment.”

I remembered.

A logistics unit.

A missing inventory.

A warehouse fire.

A civilian contractor who disappeared.

I had assumed those events were unrelated.

My mother shook her head.

“They were testing whether you noticed patterns.”

I turned toward her.

“And I did.”

“Yes.”

“That's why they kept moving me.”

“Yes.”

The colonel interrupted.

“Major, we found something else.”

He led us into a secure room.

A table was covered with documents.

One folder had my name.

Another had my mother's.

The third belonged to my aunt.

But there was a fourth.

My father's.

I opened it.

Inside were financial records dating back decades.

Payments from shell companies.

Transfers to accounts overseas.

Property purchases.

And one recurring payment.

Every month.

A large amount.

Paid to an account under my name.

I stared at it.

“I never received this.”

“No,” my mother said.

The colonel looked uncomfortable.

“The money was redirected.”

“To whom?”

He handed me another page.

My father's name.

I felt sick.

My father had been using money meant for me.

For years.

“Why?”

My mother answered.

“To make them believe he controlled you.”

I looked at her.

“Did he?”

“No.”

She hesitated.

“Not completely.”

I closed the folder.

That answer hurt.

“Where is he?”

“Under protective custody.”

I nodded.

Then the lights flickered.

Everyone stopped.

The secure room door locked automatically.

A screen on the wall turned on.

My aunt appeared.

She sat at a desk somewhere dark.

“Hello, Rebecca.”

I approached the screen.

“Where's Jason?”

“He's safe.”

“You're lying.”

“He is alive.”

My aunt smiled.

“You came back.”

“You knew I would.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because this place matters to you.”

I looked around.

“You manipulated my whole life to bring me here.”

“No.”

She leaned toward the camera.

“We built your whole life around this place.”

My mother stepped forward.

“Let her go.”

My aunt's expression hardened.

“You still think you're her protector.”

“I am.”

“You abandoned her.”

My mother flinched.

I felt something inside me shift.

My aunt continued.

“She wants answers, Claire. Give them to her.”

My mother looked at me.

I nodded.

“Tell me everything.”

She closed her eyes.

“The organization had military, financial, and political connections.”

She paused.

“But it was never a single government program.”

“It was a private network.”

“Yes.”

“Who founded it?”

My mother looked at the screen.

“My father.”

I stared.

“Your father?”

“No.”

My mother's voice shook.

“His father.”

My grandfather.

A man I barely remembered.

My aunt spoke again.

“He created the network after the war.”

“And my father inherited it?”

“He inherited part of it.”

My mother corrected her.

“He tried to destroy it.”

My aunt laughed.

“He tried too late.”

The screen went black.

The door unlocked.

The colonel looked at me.

“Major, we need to move.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“What?”

“She wants me to follow the trail.”

My mother looked at me.

“And you will?”

I picked up the old photograph missing from my office.

I stared at my younger face.

Then at the empty space where my lieutenant had stood.

“Yes.”

“But why?”

“Because she thinks she knows how I will finish this.”

I turned toward the door.

“She doesn't.”
