My daughter said she had fish biting her inside. In the ER, the x-ray showed 36 magnets in her belly. My husband accused me in front of everyone. I asked to check the dining room camera… and what started playing on the screen could destroy my entire family.

Officer Lawson opened the app and searched for Sunday’s recordings.

“The camera detected movement from twelve-seventeen until nine at night,” she said. “We will start when the girl was left alone.”

Ethan remained standing by the wall, his arms crossed. I sat in front of the phone. My hands were freezing.

The dining room appeared on the screen, illuminated by the afternoon sun. Laughter could be heard from the patio. Chloe walked in carrying a doll, sat under the table, and began to brush its hair.

“Fast forward,” Lawson requested.

The minutes flew by.

Chloe left.

Then my mother-in-law, Eleanor, walked in.

She walked straight to the display cabinet.

I stopped breathing.

Eleanor looked both ways, took something out of her dress pocket, and unlocked it.

A key.

The same key that, according to everyone, only existed on my keychain.

“It can’t be,” Ethan murmured.

His mother took out the magnetic sculpture, wrapped it in a napkin, and placed it on the table. Then she made a call.

Shortly after, Nolan appeared.

Ethan’s younger brother closed the dining room door and lowered his voice, but the camera’s microphone managed to pick up every word.

“Are you sure this will work?”

“It has to work,” Eleanor replied. “If the girl gets sick, everyone will look at Natalie.”

I felt the air vanish from the hallway.

Ethan moved toward the phone.

“That is edited.”

Lawson raised a hand.

“Do not touch the device.”

On the screen, Nolan picked up several magnetic balls.

“What if she dies?”

“She is not going to die. Kids swallow things all the time. A few will be enough to put her in the hospital.”

“You said we needed something serious.”

“Serious, yes. Fatal, no.”

Nolan began separating the magnets into small groups. Eleanor took out a bag of chocolate candies and melted some with a cup of hot water.

I understood what I was watching before it happened.

They covered them in chocolate.

They turned them into candy.

Ethan slumped into a chair.

“Mom wouldn’t do that.”

The recording continued.

Sarah walked into the dining room.

“Haley is asking for Chloe,” she warned.

“Distract her,” Eleanor ordered. “And tell Ethan that his wife is talking to that lawyer again.”

Sarah smiled.

“That will make him furious.”

Then Chloe appeared.

She walked in hugging her doll, trusting, innocent.

Eleanor crouched in front of her.

“Come here, princess. Grandma has some little chocolate fish.”

Chloe looked at the little balls.

“They don’t look like fish.”

“They swim when they get to your tummy.”

Nolan let out a nervous laugh.

My mother-in-law gave the first sphere to my daughter.

Chloe chewed it, grimaced, and tried to spit it out.

Eleanor covered her mouth.

“Swallow.”

The little girl obeyed.

Then she gave her another.

And another.

“That’s enough,” Nolan said. “You said five.”

“We need them to show up clearly on the X-ray.”

“They are magnets, Mom. They can stick together inside.”

“Shut up.”

Chloe started crying.

“I don’t want any more little fish.”

Eleanor grabbed her by the chin.

“Listen to me carefully. If you tell your mom what happened, she is going to die. Do you understand?”

My daughter nodded, terrified.

Sarah stood in front of the door to prevent anyone from coming in.

For seven minutes, they forced Chloe to swallow the thirty-six magnets.

When they finished, Nolan hid the sculpture inside a backpack. Eleanor wiped the table and locked the display cabinet. Then she did something that made me feel a deeper nausea than everything before.

She took my keychain out of her pocket.

The keychain I had searched for minutes later, believing it had always been in my purse.

“How did she get it?” asked Lawson.

I remembered that, during lunch, Eleanor had asked me for some hand cream. My purse was in the bedroom. She offered to go get it.

The officer paused the video.

“We have a premeditated assault on a minor, tampering with evidence, and a direct threat. I need the full names of all three individuals.”

Ethan stood up abruptly.

“You are not going to arrest my mother over a video that we don’t even know is authentic.”

The officer observed him with a calm that scared me more than a shout.

“Sir, your daughter is in an operating room because your mother fed her thirty-six magnets. I recommend you think carefully about what position you want to take in this investigation.”

“My mother said she wasn’t going to die.”

He said it too quickly.

Too naturally.

Lawson and I looked at him at the same time.

“How do you know what your mother expected to happen?” she asked.

Ethan opened his mouth.

No sound came out.

The recording was still paused on Eleanor’s face.

The officer pressed play again.

Nolan had already left. Sarah escorted Chloe out of the dining room. Eleanor was left alone and dialed a number.

A few seconds later, Ethan’s phone appeared on the dining room table. It vibrated next to a tray.

The call connected through the smartwatch she was wearing.

My husband’s voice rang out from the patio.

“Is it done?”

I felt a blow inside my chest.

Ethan backed away.

“No.”

On the screen, Eleanor replied:

“Yes. But your brother got nervous.”

“He always gets nervous.”

“The girl cried.”

“She’ll get over it.”

“And what if Natalie calls the police?”

“She won’t. When I accuse her in front of the doctors, she will crumble. She has been doubting herself for months.”

Every word tore a memory from me.

The objects that disappeared and reappeared.

The doors I swore I had locked.

The conversations Ethan denied having.

The times he told me I was confused, tired, unstable.

They weren’t lapses in memory.

It was a strategy.

“Why?” I asked.

Ethan didn’t look at me.
