PART 4 — The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

PART 4 — The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

Nobody moved.

The voice outside the storage unit repeated itself.

“Julian… open the door.”

My fingers went numb.

Because I knew that voice.

I had heard it my entire life.

The voice that taught me how to ride a bicycle.

The voice that stayed up all night when I had the flu.

The voice that called me every Sunday morning just to ask if I was eating enough.

My father.

But my father was dead.

I had watched the coffin being lowered.

I had stood beside his grave.

I had accepted condolences from people who told me how much they admired him.

Yet somehow…

his voice was standing on the other side of the door.

Agent Donovan raised her hand.

A silent command.

Do not move.

Do not answer.

Do not trust.

Then she whispered:

“Julian, your father warned me this moment might happen.”

I looked at her.

“What moment?”

“The moment when someone tries to convince you the impossible is true.”

The door handle moved.

Slowly.

Someone outside was trying the lock.

But Unit 17 was secured from the inside.

Then my mother spoke.

“Julian, please.”

Her voice cracked.

“He’s waiting for you.”

My heart tightened.

“He?”

Agent Donovan looked at the door.

“Your father?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

A terrible silence followed.

“Your father’s enemy.”

I felt the air leave my lungs.

The computer screen suddenly flashed.

A new message appeared.

DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR.

Then another line appeared.

THE PERSON OUTSIDE KNOWS YOUR FATHER’S VOICE BECAUSE HE HAS BEEN LISTENING FOR YEARS.

I stared at the screen.

My father had recorded this before everything happened.

He knew.

He knew someone would come.

Someone would use his voice.

Someone would try to manipulate me.

Then the final line appeared.

PLAY AUDIO FILE 09.

I clicked.

At first, there was only static.

Then I heard my father.

But this recording was different.

He sounded angry.

Afraid.

“Julian, if you hear this, it means Victor has made his move.”

My stomach dropped.

Victor.

The name from the emails.

My father continued.

“Victor Hale is not a stranger. He is family.”

Agent Donovan looked at me.

“What?”

The recording continued.

“He is your mother’s older brother.”

I froze.

My mother had an older brother?

I had never heard that name.

Never once.

“Your grandfather erased him from the family after discovering what he had done. But secrets do not disappear. They wait.”

The computer displayed another photograph.

A younger man.

Standing beside my grandfather.

Victor Hale.

My father’s voice continued.

“Victor spent decades believing he was cheated out of an inheritance. He blamed our entire family.”

The storage unit became painfully quiet.

“He came back years ago under a different identity.”

My fingers tightened.

“Who?”

The answer appeared on screen before my father said it.

HAROLD PIKE.

I stared at the photograph.

The funeral director.

The man who claimed to help my father.

The man who handed me the key.

My father’s voice continued.

“Harold was never helping me.”

Agent Donovan’s expression changed.

For the first time, she looked genuinely shocked.

“He was helping himself.”

A loud crash came from outside.

Someone had hit the door.

My mother screamed.

“Julian! You need to leave!”

Then another voice spoke.

Harold.

“Enough games.”

My blood ran cold.

The man who buried the empty coffin.

The man who pretended to protect my father.

He was standing outside.

And he was not alone.

Agent Donovan reached for her radio.

“We have a breach attempt at Unit 17.”

Then she looked at me.

“Your father wanted you to know one more thing.”

“What?”

She pointed at the final unopened folder.

The one with my name.

“Your father didn’t fake his death because he was hiding from them.”

She paused.

“He faked his death because he was setting a trap.”

I opened the folder.

Inside was a single photograph.

A photograph taken three days earlier.

The day my father supposedly died.

It showed him alive.

Standing outside a building.

Beside him was a person I recognized immediately.

Someone I trusted.

Someone who had been comforting me since the funeral.

Someone who had cried beside my family.

My wife.

Celeste.

But the worst part was not seeing her beside my father.

The worst part was the date written beneath the picture.

Taken yesterday.

I looked at Agent Donovan.

“My father is alive.”

She nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

Another crash hit the door.

“And he’s not the only person who survived.”

The lights inside Unit 17 suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Then my father’s voice came through the computer speakers one last time.

“Julian…”

A pause.

“Whatever happens next…”

“Do not believe anyone who says they came to save you.”

The storage door began opening.

And standing in the darkness outside…

was the man I buried three days ago.
