PART 6 — The Woman Behind The Lie
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The voice from the loudspeaker echoed through the storage facility.
“Celeste.”
My father said her name like it was a warning.
Not a question.
Not disbelief.
A warning.
I stared at him.
“You knew?”
His eyes met mine.
“I suspected.”
The words hit harder than I expected.
“You suspected my wife was involved, and you still let me go home to her?”
My father looked away.
“I was trying to protect you.”
“By letting me live with someone who was betraying me?”
Before he could answer, Agent Donovan stepped forward.
“Julian, listen carefully.”
She pointed toward the vehicles outside.
“The people out there are not here because your father is dangerous.”
“Then why are they here?”
“Because someone wants you to believe he is.”
A shadow moved outside the window.
The men surrounding the building were not acting like police.
They were waiting.
Watching.
Controlling every exit.
My father looked at the folder in my hands.
“Open it.”
I hesitated.
“What is inside?”
“The truth.”
I opened the folder.
The first page was a document.
A financial report.
The second page was a photograph.
The third page was a name.
Celeste Mercer.
My wife.
But the next pages made my hands shake.
Bank transfers.
Emails.
Meeting records.
Dates.
Years of information.
I looked at my father.
“She was working with Victor?”
He shook his head.
“No.”
“Then who?”
His expression became heavier.
“Someone much closer.”
My eyes moved back to the documents.
A company name appeared repeatedly.
Mercer Holdings.
My father’s company.
The company he built.
The company I thought I would inherit someday.
I looked up.
“What am I seeing?”
My father sat down slowly.
“Eight years ago, I discovered money was being moved out of the company.”
“By who?”
He didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“By your mother.”
I froze.
“My mother?”
Agent Donovan looked down.
“She was not acting alone.”
My heart started racing.
“No.”
My father opened another file.
Inside was a photograph.
My mother.
Victor.
And someone else.
Someone I recognized.
Someone who had been at my father’s funeral.
Someone who had hugged me.
Someone who had cried beside me.
Harold Pike.
The gravedigger.
The funeral director.
My father continued.
“Your mother and Victor created a plan to take control of everything I built.”
I stared at the photograph.
“But Harold helped you.”
My father gave a bitter smile.
“That is what he wanted everyone to believe.”
“Then why did he give me the key?”
“Because he was scared.”
“Of what?”
My father looked toward the door.
“Of what Victor would do once he realized he had lost control.”
Suddenly, the loudspeaker turned on again.
Celeste’s voice filled the room.
“Julian.”
My entire body froze.
She sounded calm.
Almost gentle.
The same voice that used to say good morning beside me.
The same voice that whispered she loved me.
“Please don’t listen to him.”
My father clenched his jaw.
Celeste continued.
“Your father has spent his whole life manipulating people.”
I stepped toward the speaker.
“Celeste?”
A pause.
Then:
“Yes, Julian.”
My throat tightened.
“Are you outside?”
“I’m trying to save you.”
A bitter laugh escaped me.
“Save me?”
“Yes.”
She sounded emotional now.
“Your father is dangerous.”
My father shook his head.
“She is lying.”
Celeste heard him.
“Of course he would say that.”
Then she said something that made everyone in the room go silent.
“Julian, ask him why your mother disappeared.”
I looked at my father.
“What?”
My father’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I noticed.
“Dad?”
He didn’t answer.
That silence was worse than any confession.
“Why did Mom leave?”
My father looked down.
“Because she found out the truth.”
“What truth?”
Before he could answer, the building lights flickered.
Agent Donovan checked her radio.
“We’re losing signal.”
My father grabbed my arm.
“We need to leave.”
“Not until you tell me everything.”
He looked at me.
For the first time in my life…
my father looked afraid.
“Your mother didn’t leave us.”
A cold feeling moved through my chest.
“What are you saying?”
“She disappeared.”
The room became silent.
“Twenty years ago.”
I stared at him.
“But everyone said she left.”
“She wanted you to believe that.”
“Who did?”
My father looked toward the door.
Then at the speaker.
Then back at me.
“Celeste’s family.”
My blood ran cold.
“What?”
He whispered:
“Julian…”
“Your wife did not meet me by accident.”
The speaker clicked.
Celeste spoke one final sentence.
And this time…
she was no longer pretending.
“You finally understand, don’t you?”
A pause.
“You were never my husband.”
The words froze me.
“You were my way back into the Mercer family.”
The door handle began turning.
Slowly.
Someone was coming in.
My father grabbed the old brass key from my hand.
Then whispered:
“Your mother is alive.”
I stopped breathing.
“Where?”
He looked at the opening door.
And said:
“She is the person standing behind Celeste.”
The door opened.
And the woman who had been missing for twenty years…
walked into Unit 17.
