PART 6 – The Safe Deposit Box Exposed an Older Secret, but Daniel’s Next Move Showed He Had Planned for Me to Discover It Too

By eight that morning, my attorney had confirmed the trust existed.

My mother's money had been placed into an account she could access for her own benefit, but it was not community property and could not simply be transferred to Daniel.

That explained the pressure.

It didn't explain everything.

I kept thinking about the message telling me to ask about the safe deposit box.

Someone wanted me to find it.

My attorney agreed.

“Whoever sent that message knew exactly what was inside.”

“Could it have been Daniel?”

“Possibly.”

“Or Patricia?”

“Possibly.”

“Then why help me?”

He folded the letter from my father and placed it back into the envelope.

“Because people involved in financial schemes don't always want the same outcome.”

The phrase stayed with me.

People involved.

Plural.

That meant he believed there were others.

I asked him about Karen Bell.

He had already started checking.

“She owns the office where the LLC is registered.”

“Is she connected to Daniel?”

“She was a consultant for a company your husband worked with several years ago.”

“Does she have a criminal record?”

“I haven't found anything relevant yet.”

I nodded.

“Find out why Daniel was meeting her.”

My attorney looked at his watch.

“Before that, we need to protect your children.”

That sentence changed the morning.

He arranged for the twins to stay with my sister temporarily.

I hated it.

But I knew it was necessary.

Daniel had already threatened to keep them from me.

I couldn't risk another confrontation without legal protection.

At noon, we went to court.

The temporary order was filed.

It did not settle custody.

It did not decide the marriage.

It simply established that neither parent could remove the children from the area without agreement or court authorization.

For the first time since I had walked into the bathroom, I could breathe.

Then Daniel called.

I answered with my attorney beside me.

“You went to court.”

“Yes.”

“You didn't have to.”

“I did.”

“You're making this ugly.”

“You forged my signature.”

“I told you why.”

“No. You told me it was temporary.”

“It was.”

“Then why was there a loan application?”

He said nothing.

I waited.

Finally he said, “Because I needed money.”

“At least you're admitting it.”

“I was going to pay it back.”

“With what?”

“I had a plan.”

“What plan?”

He didn't answer.

I looked at my attorney.

He motioned for me to continue.

“Was the plan to use my house?”

“Yes.”

“And my mother's money?”

“No.”

That answer came too quickly.

I noticed.

“You knew about the trust.”

Daniel went silent.

“Who told you?”

“No one.”

“You knew.”

“I knew your mother had savings.”

“How?”

“I've been married to you for eleven years.”

“That doesn't answer the question.”

He ended the call.

My attorney immediately wrote down the time.

“Do not contact him again unless necessary.”

I nodded.

That afternoon, my sister found something.

She had gone through the boxes I had left at her house years earlier.

Inside was an old laptop.

Daniel had used it during our first year of marriage.

I remembered it.

I also remembered that I had never collected the files from it.

My sister turned it on.

There were hundreds of old documents.

Most were irrelevant.

Then we found a folder named BELL.

I stared at the screen.

There were emails between Daniel and Karen.

They dated back nearly three years.

The first message was harmless.

The later ones weren't.

They discussed investments.

Debt.

A business proposal.

Then there was an email from Karen dated nine months earlier.

Your wife cannot know about the property until the financing is approved.

I read it twice.

My sister whispered, “Laura.”

I kept scrolling.

Another message.

If Margaret refuses, use the family connection.

Another.

Daniel needs to understand that the house is the only clean collateral available.

My hands went cold.

The messages continued.

They knew about my mother's money.

They knew about the house.

They had planned the LLC.

And then I found the message that changed everything.

Patricia is willing to pressure Margaret. She believes Laura will take her side if she sees Margaret as the victim.

I stopped breathing.

My mother had not simply been caught in the middle.

She had been deliberately positioned there.

My husband had counted on me finding her humiliated and blaming her for something she didn't understand.

He had expected the chaos to make me easier to manipulate.

I closed the laptop.

“I need to see Karen.”

My attorney shook his head.

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because now we have evidence.”

“What evidence?”

“That your husband and another person discussed using your property without your authorization.”

He looked at the screen.

“And we may have evidence of a larger financial scheme.”

Before we could do anything else, my phone rang.

It was my mother.

Her voice was shaking.

“Laura.”

“What happened?”

“Patricia is here.”

My heart slammed against my ribs.

“Where?”

“At the house.”

“Why are you there?”

“I came to get my medication.”

“Leave.”

“I tried.”

“What happened?”

“She locked the door.”

My attorney was already standing.

“Call the police.”

I did.

Then we drove.

When we arrived, a police cruiser was already outside.

Patricia was standing on the porch.

My mother was behind her.

The officer asked what was happening.

Patricia said my mother had trespassed.

I stared at her.

“She lives there.”

Patricia's expression changed.

“No. She doesn't.”

“She has been staying there.”

“That doesn't give her the right to take property.”

“What property?”

Patricia held up a box.

My mother's medication.

I stepped forward.

“Give it to her.”

“No.”

The officer intervened.

“Ma'am, hand over the medication.”

Patricia obeyed.

My mother took it.

Then Patricia looked directly at me.

“You think you've won.”

I said nothing.

She smiled.

It was a small smile.

Almost pitying.

“You haven't.”

I watched her walk away.

My attorney stood beside me.

“Don't respond.”

“I wasn't going to.”

But my mother was staring at Patricia's car.

“She knows.”

“Knows what?”

My mother looked at me.

“Your father left more than money.”

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“What else did he leave?”

She shook her head.

“I don't know.”

“You said you did.”

“I said I found something.”

She opened her purse.

Inside was a photograph.

My father stood beside a younger Daniel.

And beside Daniel stood Karen Bell.

The photograph was dated twelve years earlier.

Before Daniel and I married.

Before I ever knew Karen existed.

I turned it over.

There was writing on the back.

Your husband knows where the missing money went.
