PART 5 – Daniel Closed the Door Behind Him, and His First Words Forced Me to Reconsider Everything I Thought I Knew About Michael

Daniel did not look surprised to see me.

That was the first thing I noticed.

The second was that he did not move toward me. He simply stood in the doorway with one hand resting against the frame, watching my face as I held the folder.

"You came," he said.

I stepped backward.

"Stay where you are."

A faint smile touched his mouth.

"I wasn't planning to come closer."

"Who are you?"

"You already know my name."

"No. I know the name you gave me."

His expression changed.

For the first time since I had met him, the easy warmth disappeared from his face.

"That's fair."

Behind me, somewhere downstairs, one of the officers moved across the corridor. I wanted to call out, but Daniel raised his hand.

"If you want them to arrest me, you can do that. But you should read the rest of the file first."

I looked at the papers on the desk.

"Why did you bring me here?"

"I didn't."

The answer stopped me.

"You sent the messages."

"No."

"You left the photographs."

"No."

"You slept with me."

He looked away for a moment.

"Yes."

The bluntness of the answer made my face burn.

"I don't understand."

"I know."

He stepped into the room and closed the door again, but this time he did not lock it.

"I met you because I was looking for someone connected to your son."

"Michael."

Daniel nodded.

"I thought he was involved."

"Was he?"

"I don't know."

"That's not good enough."

"No," he said quietly. "It isn't."

I held up the contract.

"This has his signature."

"Look at the date."

"I already did."

"Then you know it couldn't have been signed when they claim."

"Who are they?"

Daniel pulled a chair away from the desk.

"Sit."

"I'll stand."

"Fine."

He opened another folder.

Inside were photographs.

Dozens of them.

Michael entering buildings.

Michael speaking to unfamiliar men.

Michael sitting in a café.

Michael leaving a bank.

My throat tightened.

"How long have you been following him?"

"I wasn't following him."

"Then why take these?"

"Because someone hired me to."

I stared at him.

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"You're a photographer."

"Among other things."

"What does that mean?"

"It means I take pictures for people who don't want to be seen taking pictures themselves."

I felt a coldness spread through my hands.

"Surveillance."

"Sometimes."

"Who hired you?"

"I was contacted through an agency."

"Name?"

"None."

"You're lying."

"No."

He pointed to one photograph.

"This is the first picture I took of your son."

Michael was standing outside a financial office.

"What was he doing there?"

"Meeting a man named Victor Hale."

The name meant nothing to me.

Daniel continued.

"Victor runs a private lending operation. Not illegal on paper. The kind of business that becomes less respectable when people can't pay."

I looked at another photograph.

Michael was sitting across from an older man.

"Is that Victor?"

"Yes."

"What did Michael owe him?"

"I don't know."

"Then what do you know?"

Daniel leaned against the desk.

"I know your son borrowed money. I know he fell behind. I know Victor began pressuring him. And I know your son repeatedly told him that he would not touch your money."

I stared at him.

Emily's words came back to me.

She had heard Michael say, "She won't give you anything."

Not because he was planning to steal from me.

Because someone was demanding that he do it.

"Why would Michael refuse?"

Daniel looked at me.

"Because despite everything else, your son loves you."

The sentence should have comforted me.

Instead, it made my eyes sting.

"Then why was he with you?"

"He hired me."

I looked up sharply.

"What?"

"Your son contacted me after he realized someone was watching him."

"Why?"

"He wanted to know who."

"And you agreed?"

"I did."

"Why?"

"Because the person watching him was also watching you."

Silence filled the room.

I looked down at the photographs again.

There were pictures of my building.

My car.

My apartment entrance.

Even me carrying groceries.

"How long?"

"Almost six weeks."

I felt sick.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I tried."

"When?"

"Before your birthday."

I looked at him.

"You mean the first time we met?"

"No."

He reached into the folder and removed another photograph.

It showed me standing outside my apartment three days before my birthday.

Daniel was across the street.

"I was trying to identify the person following you."

"Why approach me at the bar?"

"I didn't plan to."

"That isn't true."

He hesitated.

"I saw you sitting alone."

"And?"

"And you looked like someone who had been waiting for a phone call that wasn't coming."

The words landed painfully because they were true.

"You could have told me."

"I didn't know whether I could trust you."

I laughed once.

"After sleeping with me?"

His face tightened.

"I regret that."

I looked at him.

Not because he had rejected me.

Because he looked genuinely ashamed.

"I don't."

He did not answer.

A noise sounded in the hallway.

We both turned.

The door opened.

One of the officers stepped inside.

"Mrs. Carter, are you all right?"

"Yes."

He looked at Daniel.

"Step away from the door."

Daniel complied.

The officer searched him, found no weapon, and took his identification.

"You have some explaining to do."

Daniel nodded.

"I know."

I turned toward the desk.

"What is the rest of this?"

Daniel looked at me.

"Your son wasn't the person who emptied the safe."

"Then who was?"

He pushed another photograph across the desk.

It showed a woman entering my apartment building.

I recognized her immediately.

Emily.

My daughter.

I stared at the photograph.

"No."

Daniel said nothing.

"That can't be."

The photograph showed Emily carrying a handbag and looking over her shoulder.

The date was two days before my birthday.

"She came to my apartment."

"Yes."

"She has a key."

"Yes."

"But she didn't know the combination."

Daniel looked at the folder.

"Maybe she didn't need it."

My stomach dropped.

"What are you saying?"

"I think your daughter knew more than she told you."

The officer looked between us.

"Do you want to continue?"

I nodded.

Daniel opened the final section of the file.

There was a bank transfer.

Money had moved from an account connected to Emily to an account connected to Victor Hale.

The amount was large.

Very large.

I read the number twice.

"That's impossible."

Daniel shook his head.

"It happened."

I looked at the officer.

"Can you verify this?"

"We'll need the original records."

Daniel nodded.

"There's something else."

He pulled out a final photograph.

It showed Emily meeting Victor.

But this photograph was different.

She wasn't alone.

Standing beside her was the same gray-haired man I remembered from Michael's visit to my apartment.

My pulse quickened.

"Who is he?"

Daniel looked directly at me.

"Your daughter's husband."

I stopped breathing.

Emily had been divorced for four years.

Her former husband had moved overseas.

At least, that was what she had told me.

Daniel watched my face.

"Your daughter never told you he came back."

I looked at the photograph again.

The man was older, heavier, but unmistakably familiar.

I had met him before.

He had once sat at my dining table and called me Mom.

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Your family has been lying to you for months."

I looked at the open folder.

Then toward the hallway where the police were waiting.

For the first time, I understood that the safe was only the smallest part of what had been taken from me.

Trust had been emptied too.
