PART 7 – The Missing Ledger Revealed Why Robert Had Been Afraid, While Daniel Finally Admitted the Part He Played in My Birthday Trap

The second message from Emily arrived before I could respond.

"He's going to the old house."

I knew immediately which house she meant.

The small property Robert and I had owned before moving into the apartment.

We had sold it years ago.

Or so I thought.

I looked at the officer.

"The old house."

"Where?"

I gave him the address.

He spoke quickly into his radio.

Daniel, who had remained with the police since the previous night, was standing near the doorway.

"I know the place," he said.

I turned toward him.

"How?"

"Because I've been there."

"Why?"

He didn't answer immediately.

The officer stepped between us.

"Start talking."

Daniel nodded.

"Three weeks ago, I was hired to photograph the property."

"By whom?"

"The same intermediary."

"Why?"

"Because someone believed your husband had hidden documents there."

My heart began pounding.

"Documents about what?"

"I don't know."

"You keep saying that."

"Because it's true."

I stared at him.

"Then tell me what you do know."

He looked at the floor.

"The night we met, I had already been watching the building."

"You knew I'd be there."

"Yes."

"How?"

"I was told to expect you."

"Who told you?"

"The intermediary."

"Did they tell you to sleep with me?"

Daniel's face tightened.

"No."

"Then why?"

"Because I wanted to."

The honesty hurt more than a lie would have.

"That doesn't make it better."

"I know."

The officer interrupted.

"We're leaving."

The old house stood at the end of a quiet road outside the city.

The trees around it had grown taller since I last saw it.

The porch sagged slightly.

The windows were dark.

For a moment, I remembered Robert carrying boxes through the front door while I complained that the kitchen was too small.

Then I saw the broken lock.

Someone had forced entry.

The police went inside first.

We followed.

Dust covered the floors.

Furniture remained from the people who had bought the house after us.

The air smelled of damp wood.

I knew every room.

The kitchen.

The narrow hallway.

The study where Robert used to work.

I walked there without thinking.

The desk was gone.

The walls had been repainted.

But the fireplace remained.

I remembered Robert kneeling beside it one winter.

He had tapped the bricks and laughed when I asked what he was doing.

"Checking the house."

I had forgotten.

I knelt.

The officer watched me.

"What are you looking for?"

"I don't know."

I ran my fingers along the bricks.

One moved.

I froze.

"Here."

The officer examined it.

He removed the brick.

Behind it was a metal box.

My heart raced.

Inside was a collection of documents.

Bank records.

Property deeds.

Photographs.

And a letter addressed to me.

I opened it.

Robert's handwriting.

My vision blurred.

"Dear Claire,

If you're reading this, something has gone wrong."

I stopped.

The officer looked away, giving me privacy.

I continued.

"I should have told you everything years ago. I was afraid that knowing would put you in danger."

My hands shook.

"Victor Hale has been using people close to us to move money. I helped him once because I thought I could control the situation. I was wrong."

The next line made me stop.

"Emily knows part of the truth. Michael knows another part. Neither child knows the whole story."

I looked up.

So both of my children had been hiding something.

But neither had known everything.

I continued reading.

"Thomas is not the person he appears to be. If he returns, do not believe his story about leaving."

My stomach tightened.

The letter continued.

"He believes I kept evidence against him."

The room seemed to shrink.

Thomas had been involved too.

The letter ended with one final warning.

"The most dangerous person will not be the one demanding your money. It will be the one who convinces you that they are protecting you."

I lowered the letter.

Daniel was standing near the doorway.

"Did you know about this?"

"No."

"You're sure?"

"Yes."

I studied him.

Then I noticed something.

A photograph lay beneath the letter.

It showed Robert, Emily, Michael, and Thomas.

They were standing together at a family gathering.

Daniel had been right about one thing.

Thomas had been part of our lives long before I understood his role.

A sound came from upstairs.

The police moved immediately.

I followed despite their instructions.

We reached the second floor.

A bedroom door stood open.

Thomas was inside.

Emily was sitting on the floor.

Her wrists were tied.

Michael was standing against the wall.

Thomas turned toward us.

"Stay back."

The officer raised his weapon.

"Drop anything you're holding."

Thomas laughed.

"You think this is about money?"

He held up the red ledger.

"This is about what Robert knew."

"Put it down."

Thomas looked at me.

"Your husband destroyed my life."

I felt something cold settle in my chest.

"What did he do?"

"He found out what I was doing."

"What were you doing?"

"Moving money."

"With Victor?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I owed him."

Emily spoke from the floor.

"He's lying."

Thomas looked at her.

"You always were the clever one."

Michael moved toward his sister.

The officer ordered him to stop.

Thomas's grip tightened around the ledger.

"Robert was going to expose us."

"Us?"

"Victor. Me. Others."

"Did you kill him?"

The question came out before I could stop it.

Thomas's face changed.

"No."

The answer was immediate.

"Then why did he die?"

"Because he was already sick."

I stared at him.

"I know."

Thomas shook his head.

"You don't know everything."

Daniel stepped forward.

"I do."

Thomas looked at him.

"You."

Daniel's voice hardened.

"You hired my agency."

Thomas went still.

The room became silent.

Daniel continued.

"You hired me to watch Michael."

Thomas said nothing.

"You wanted to know whether he had found the documents."

Still nothing.

"You didn't know the documents had been moved."

Thomas's eyes shifted toward me.

Daniel saw it.

"You didn't know Robert left them for his wife."

Thomas lunged toward the window.

The officers tackled him before he could reach it.

The ledger fell.

Emily cried out.

Michael rushed to her.

I stood frozen.

The man who had haunted my family for years was finally on the floor.

But something still bothered me.

I looked at Daniel.

"You said Thomas hired your agency."

"Yes."

"Then why did you say you didn't know who hired you?"

"Because he didn't hire me directly."

"Who did?"

Daniel looked at me.

"Emily."

My daughter froze.

I stared at her.

"What?"

Emily began crying.

"I was trying to protect you."

"By hiring him?"

"I knew Thomas was coming back. I knew he wanted the documents. I didn't know what to do."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I thought you'd go to Michael."

"And?"

"Michael was already being watched."

I looked at my son.

He nodded.

Emily continued.

"I asked Daniel to watch him. Then I learned someone was watching me too."

I felt exhausted.

All the lies had been built around fear.

Everyone had been hiding something.

Everyone had thought secrecy was protection.

And all of it had brought a stranger into my bed on my birthday.

I looked at Daniel.

"Did Emily arrange the meeting at the bar?"

"No."

"Who did?"

Daniel's expression changed.

"I finally know."

He reached into his jacket.

Inside was a small card.

A name was printed on it.

Victor Hale.

Daniel looked at me.

"Your birthday wasn't chosen because you were vulnerable."

"Then why?"

"Because Victor knew exactly what you would do when your family forgot you."

I stared at the card.

And suddenly the entire night looked different.

The birthday.

The bar.

The hotel.

The envelope.

The photographs.

It had all been designed to make me suspect my own children.

Victor had wanted me isolated.

And he had almost succeeded.
