PART 3 — The Woman Behind the Door
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Agent Donovan.
Not even the person standing outside Unit 17.
Because we all knew the same thing.
My mother was not supposed to be here.
She had been at the cemetery.
She had watched me leave.
She had no reason to know where I was going.
Unless someone had told her.
Agent Donovan slowly stepped toward the side wall and lowered her voice.
“Julian, listen carefully.”
I looked at her.
“If your mother is outside, she cannot know everything we know.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means she may not be the person controlling this situation.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Then who is?”
Agent Donovan did not answer.
Instead, she pointed toward the computer.
The screen had changed.
A new video file appeared.
PLAY BEFORE TRUSTING ANYONE.
My father’s instructions.
I clicked it.
The screen flickered.
My father appeared again.
This time, he looked different.
Older.
Tired.
Like the weight of years had finally caught up with him.
“Julian,” he said.
“If you are watching this, you have already met Agent Donovan.”
I looked at her.
She nodded slightly.
“She is one of the few people I trust.”
My father continued.
“But there is someone else you need to know about.”
The video paused for a moment.
Then his next words made my entire body go cold.
“Your mother did not betray me.”
I blinked.
What?
The screen continued.
“She was protecting you.”
I looked at Agent Donovan.
Neither of us spoke.
My father leaned closer to the camera.
“For years, I allowed people to believe your mother was weak. That she depended on me. That she knew nothing.”
He shook his head.
“That was the only way to keep her alive.”
A sound came from outside.
My mother’s voice.
“Julian, please open the door.”
It sounded scared.
Not angry.
Not demanding.
Scared.
I moved toward the entrance.
Agent Donovan stopped me.
“Wait.”
“But that’s my mother.”
“That’s exactly why you wait.”
I looked back at the video.
My father’s voice continued.
“The person who destroyed our family is not the person everyone suspects.”
Another file opened automatically.
A photograph appeared.
A man.
I recognized him instantly.
Harold Pike.
The funeral home owner.
The same man who had buried the empty coffin.
My heart stopped.
“Harold?”
Agent Donovan nodded.
“Keep watching.”
The next image appeared.
A bank transfer.
Millions of dollars.
The account belonged to a company I had never heard of.
But the recipient name was familiar.
Mercer Family Trust.
My father spoke again.
“Harold helped me create the illusion of my death because he was the only person who understood what was happening.”
I stared at the screen.
“But why?”
The answer came immediately.
“Because someone was trying to take control of everything I owned.”
The video showed documents.
Property transfers.
Financial records.
Signatures.
And one name appeared again and again.
Celeste Mercer.
My wife.
My hands tightened.
“No.”
I whispered it.
But this time, I wasn’t defending her.
I was trying to convince myself.
Agent Donovan looked at me carefully.
“Your father discovered your wife was moving assets before he confronted her.”
“How?”
“She used your name.”
The room became silent.
“She created documents claiming you approved the transfers.”
I felt sick.
“She was stealing from my father?”
Agent Donovan shook her head.
“Not just your father.”
She opened another folder.
Inside were copies of emails.
Messages.
Photos.
The first email was between Celeste and someone named Victor Hale.
The subject line:
Final Step Before Raymond Disappears
My stomach dropped.
“Who is Victor Hale?”
Agent Donovan looked at me.
“That is the question your father died trying to answer.”
A loud knock hit the storage door.
Everyone froze.
“Julian!”
My mother again.
But this time another voice followed.
A man’s voice.
Calm.
Familiar.
“Open the door, son.”
My blood turned cold.
I knew that voice.
It was impossible.
Because I had heard it three days ago.
At my father’s funeral.
Agent Donovan looked at me.
“Who is that?”
I couldn’t speak.
The voice came again.
“Julian, it’s me.”
A pause.
“Your father.”
The room went completely silent.
The dead man outside Unit 17 whispered:
“Open the door.”
