PART 2
The beeping inside the storage unit grew louder.
Not an alarm.
Not a security system.
A timer.
A countdown.
The FBI agent beside me looked at her watch.
“Your father planned this carefully,” she said.
I tightened my grip on the brass key.
“Who are you?”
She hesitated for a moment.
Then she answered.
“Agent Claire Donovan. I worked with your father for eleven years.”
The words hit harder than anything else that night.
“My father?”
She nodded.
“Your father was not just a retired accountant, Julian.”
I stared at her.
“What are you saying?”
Before she could answer, the lock on Unit 17 clicked.
The door opened slowly.
Inside was not what I expected.
No boxes.
No old furniture.
No family belongings.
The storage unit looked like a small office frozen in time.
A desk.
A computer.
Several locked filing cabinets.
And dozens of photographs covering the walls.
Photographs of people I had never seen.
But one photo stopped me.
My father.
Standing beside a younger version of himself.
And another man.
A man wearing a military uniform.
I stepped closer.
“Who is that?”
Agent Donovan followed my eyes.
“Your grandfather.”
I froze.
“My grandfather died before I was born.”
“Yes,” she said quietly.
“Officially.”
The word hung in the air.
Officially.
I turned toward her.
“What does that mean?”
She walked toward the desk and opened a drawer.
Inside was a folder with my name.
Not my father’s.
Mine.
Julian Mercer.
My hands began shaking.
“I don’t understand.”
“You were never supposed to understand,” Agent Donovan said.
She placed the folder in front of me.
“Your father spent twenty years preparing you for the possibility that his past would catch up with your family.”
I opened it.
The first page was a birth certificate.
Mine.
The second page was a newspaper article.
The headline made my stomach drop.
LOCAL BUSINESSMAN LINKED TO FINANCIAL CRIME INVESTIGATION
My father’s name was underneath.
Raymond Mercer.
But the date was twenty-five years earlier.
“He was accused?” I whispered.
Agent Donovan shook her head.
“No.”
She pointed at the article.
“He was investigating them.”
I looked up.
“Investigating who?”
Before she answered, the computer on the desk suddenly turned on.
The screen was black.
Then white letters appeared.
A video file opened automatically.
IF YOU ARE WATCHING THIS, I AM NO LONGER ABLE TO PROTECT YOU.
My father’s voice filled the room.
I stopped breathing.
“Julian, if you are seeing this, then the empty coffin worked.”
My eyes burned.
His voice.
Alive.
Calm.
Like he was sitting across from me at the kitchen table.
“I know you are confused. I know you are angry. You have every right to be.”
The recording continued.
“But I need you to understand something. I did not fake my death because I wanted to leave you.”
A pause.
“I did it because someone close to us wanted me gone.”
Agent Donovan looked at me.
I looked back at the screen.
My father continued.
“For years, I watched someone inside our family leak information, steal money, and manipulate the people I loved.”
My chest tightened.
Someone inside our family.
The next words changed everything.
“Julian, the person you trust most is the person you need to question first.”
The video paused.
A new file appeared.
A name.
CELESTE MERCER
My wife.
I stared at the screen.
“No.”
Agent Donovan said nothing.
“No,” I repeated.
“Celeste has nothing to do with this.”
But even as I said it, memories began returning.
The strange phone calls she took outside.
The questions about my father’s finances.
The way she always knew when my father was planning to visit.
The way she had insisted I let her handle the funeral arrangements.
My phone buzzed again.
Another message from my mother.
This time it was different.
Julian, please come home. We need to talk about your wife.
I looked at Agent Donovan.
“She knows.”
“Yes,” she replied.
“Your mother knows more than she has told you.”
The beeping stopped.
Silence filled Unit 17.
Then the computer displayed one final message.
SECURITY BACKUP COMPLETE.
Agent Donovan reached toward the keyboard.
“There is one more thing your father wanted you to see.”
She opened the final file.
A security video.
Recorded three nights before my father supposedly died.
The camera angle showed my father’s study.
He was sitting at his desk.
Alive.
Across from him…
was Celeste.
My wife.
They were arguing.
I moved closer to the screen.
My father pointed at a document.
Celeste looked terrified.
Then my father said something that made my blood run cold.
“You made one mistake, Celeste.”
The video zoomed closer.
“You forgot I taught my son never to trust anyone who hides the truth.”
The screen went black.
And behind me, the storage unit door slowly closed.
Someone was outside.
Listening.
Then a familiar voice whispered from the hallway.
“Julian?”
My mother.
“Open the door.”
Agent Donovan immediately reached for her weapon.
She looked at me and whispered:
“Your father was right.”
I swallowed.
“About what?”
She stared at the locked door.
“Your family is not what you think it is.”
