PART 5 : We reached the old hospital just after sunrise.

PART 5

We reached the old hospital just after sunrise.

The building looked abandoned from the outside.

Broken blinds.

Weeds growing through cracks in the pavement.

A faded sign hanging crooked above the entrance.

But Daniel knew better.

“There,” he whispered.

He pointed toward the side of the building.

A single security camera was still moving.

Someone was watching.

The police surrounded the property before we entered.

Detective Harris gave us strict instructions to remain together.

Then the side door opened.

Nobody touched it.

It simply swung inward.

My stomach tightened.

Someone had been expecting us.

We stepped inside.

The hallway smelled of dust, bleach, and something metallic.

Old hospital rooms lined both sides.

Most were empty.

Then we heard something.

A child crying.

Hannah grabbed my arm.

“Lucy?”

We rushed toward the sound.

The crying came from behind a locked door.

A police officer forced it open.

Inside was a small room filled with medical equipment.

There were three empty cribs.

One overturned chair.

And a wall covered with photographs.

Photographs of babies.

Dozens of them.

Hannah stepped closer.

Her hands began shaking.

“Those are birth photographs.”

Daniel looked at the wall.

Then he saw Lucy.

Her photograph was near the center.

Underneath it was a handwritten number.

17.

But beside Lucy’s photograph were other names.

Children.

Dates.

Hospital identification numbers.

And every one of them had been marked with a red line.

The detective stared at the wall.

“This isn’t a records room.”

Daniel whispered:

“It’s a list.”

“A list of what?”

He pointed toward the far end.

There were folders stacked inside a metal cabinet.

Each folder had a child’s name.

The detective opened one.

Then another.

His face became increasingly serious.

“Some of these children were reported as deceased.”

Hannah covered her mouth.

“But they’re alive?”

“We don’t know.”

Daniel pulled open another drawer.

Inside were photographs of newborn babies.

Beside each photograph was a different name.

Different parents.

Different hospital records.

My heart sank.

Someone had been altering birth records.

But why?

Then Noah noticed something.

“Mom.”

He pointed toward a desk.

There was a laptop sitting open.

On the screen was a spreadsheet.

Rows of children’s names.

Birth dates.

Parents’ names.

And a column labeled:

TRANSFERRED.

Another column said:

NEW IDENTITY.

I felt sick.

This wasn’t a single kidnapping.

It was an organized operation.

Someone had been taking newborns and changing their identities.

Then Daniel saw a familiar name.

He froze.

“That’s impossible.”

“What?”

He pointed at the screen.

His own name was listed.

DANIEL CARTER — BIOLOGICAL FATHER.

Next to it was Lucy’s name.

And beside hers:

TRANSFER COMPLETE.

Hannah started crying.

“Who transferred her?”

Daniel scrolled down.

At the bottom of the document was an electronic signature.

A name.

The same name we had seen on the forged medical records.

Dr. Evelyn Carter.

Hannah stared at it.

“My sister.”

Before anyone could react, the laptop screen went black.

Then every light in the hallway shut off.

Darkness swallowed the building.

A door slammed somewhere behind us.

The police immediately drew their weapons.

“Stay together!”

We heard footsteps running down the corridor.

Daniel started forward.

A detective stopped him.

“No.”

Then a woman’s voice echoed through the darkness.

“It’s already too late.”

Hannah recognized it immediately.

Her face went white.

“My sister.”

The lights flickered back on.

At the end of the hallway stood Evelyn.

She wasn’t alone.

Two officers moved toward her.

But Evelyn simply smiled.

“You don’t understand what you’ve uncovered.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“You stole my daughter.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I saved her.”

Hannah screamed.

“You told everyone she was dead!”

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“You think you know what happened the night Lucy was born?”

She looked at me.

Then at Noah.

Then back at Hannah.

“Your daughter wasn’t the first child they tried to take.”

The room went silent.

Evelyn slowly raised her hands.

“I spent two years trying to expose them from the inside.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Then who is running this?”

Evelyn’s eyes filled with fear.

She whispered:

“The hospital never closed.”

A pause.

“The people behind this simply moved somewhere else.”

Then she looked directly at me.

“And your son wasn’t supposed to be here.”

Noah grabbed my hand.

“What does she mean?”

Evelyn’s face went pale.

“Because they weren’t only watching Lucy.”

She pointed toward Noah.

“They’ve been watching him too.”

And behind us, somewhere deep inside the abandoned hospital, a telephone began ringing.
