PART 7 – Margaret Knew Why Michael Disappeared, but Her Confession Revealed That Daniel’s Dinner Had Been Triggered by a Much Older Threat

We found Margaret at her house.

She didn't run.

She didn't pretend surprise.

She opened the door before we knocked.

Her hair was neatly pinned.

Her face looked tired.

“Come in.”

I stared at her.

“You knew we were coming.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Because I knew Samuel would bring you here eventually.”

Samuel stepped forward.

“You should have told her years ago.”

Margaret looked at him.

“You don't get to lecture me.”

“Maybe not.”

I entered.

The house smelled exactly as I remembered.

Lavender.

Furniture polish.

The same tea cupboard.

The same framed photographs.

There was one of Michael on the mantel.

Margaret saw me looking at it.

“I never stopped loving him.”

“Then why did you help him disappear?”

Her eyes closed.

“I didn't.”

Samuel shook his head.

“You did.”

Margaret turned to him.

“I helped him survive.”

I stared at her.

“What's the difference?”

She looked at me.

“The difference is that I thought he would come back.”

“And he didn't.”

“No.”

She sat down.

“Because things became worse.”

Margaret told us the truth slowly.

My father had been involved with the property company.

Not as a criminal mastermind.

As a trustee.

He had believed he was protecting family assets.

But other people used the company for illegal transactions.

When he discovered what was happening, he tried to withdraw.

They threatened him.

Then he died.

I interrupted.

“My father died of a heart attack.”

“Yes.”

“Are you saying that wasn't true?”

“No.”

She looked down.

“He died from a heart attack. But the pressure surrounding him was not accidental.”

I felt sick.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“For twelve years?”

“Yes.”

Michael had discovered the same records.

He confronted Margaret.

She admitted she had lied to him.

She had told him the property documents were destroyed.

They weren't.

She had hidden them.

“Why?”

“To keep the people behind the scheme from finding them.”

“And Daniel?”

Margaret looked at me.

“Daniel found them anyway.”

She explained that Daniel had discovered the property's value years later.

He began searching old records.

He found the connection to my father.

Then to Michael.

That was why Michael became a threat.

Daniel didn't initially want him dead.

He wanted the documents.

When Michael refused, Daniel became desperate.

Samuel interrupted.

“And that's when Michael disappeared.”

Margaret nodded.

“I helped him.”

I felt anger rising.

“You let me believe he was dead.”

“I thought it was the only way.”

“You let me mourn him.”

Margaret's voice broke.

“I know.”

“You watched me marry Daniel.”

She looked away.

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you stop me?”

“I tried.”

I laughed bitterly.

“You never said anything.”

“Because Michael told me not to.”

That stopped me.

“Why?”

“Because Daniel was watching you.”

Margaret explained that Michael believed Daniel would hurt me if he knew Michael was alive.

So Michael stayed hidden.

He communicated through intermediaries.

He watched from a distance.

He knew about Noah.

He knew about my life.

But he stayed away.

Then Daniel's finances collapsed.

That changed everything.

“He became reckless,” Margaret said.

“He started forging documents.”

“Yes.”

“He increased the insurance.”

“Yes.”

“And the dinner?”

Margaret looked at me.

“That was the moment Michael knew he had to act.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel had discovered where Michael was.”

The room went silent.

Samuel looked at Margaret.

“You never told us that.”

“I found out later.”

I stared at her.

“Where is he?”

Margaret hesitated.

“Michael?”

“Yes.”

She gave me an address.

A small town several hours away.

“He moves frequently.”

I reached for my phone.

Samuel stopped me.

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because if Margaret is being watched, that address may be compromised.”

Margaret nodded.

“He won't stay there long.”

“Then we go now.”

She looked at me.

“Before you do, there is something else.”

I waited.

Margaret opened a drawer.

Inside was a small envelope.

She handed it to me.

“Michael gave me this years ago.”

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph of Daniel.

Not recent.

Older.

He was standing beside another man.

My father.

I stared.

“Where was this taken?”

“At the property office.”

I turned the photograph over.

A date was written on the back.

Three years before I met Daniel.

Underneath it was one sentence.

He knew my father before he met me.

I felt the floor disappear beneath me.

Daniel had told me they had never met.

He had told me my father was already dead when he first heard about him.

It was another lie.

A very old one.

Margaret said the photograph was proof that Daniel had known about the family property before our relationship began.

But she didn't know whether he had approached me because of it.

I wanted to believe he hadn't.

But I could no longer assume.

Samuel pointed to the photograph.

“Look at the other man.”

I did.

A younger Lydia stood behind them.

I stared.

She had been there too.

The three of them had known one another before I met any of them.

That changed everything.

Not the fact that Daniel had poisoned us.

That was already clear.

It changed the history I had built around my marriage.

I asked Margaret why Lydia had been involved.

“She worked for your father.”

I looked at Samuel.

He nodded.

“That's how she knew the records.”

My hands shook.

“So Daniel, Lydia, and my father were connected.”

“Not in the way you think,” Margaret said.

She explained that my father had employed Lydia as an accountant for the property company.

Daniel had been hired later to help with development planning.

They had worked together.

When my father became suspicious of the others, Daniel distanced himself.

At least publicly.

Then my father died.

The company dissolved.

The property became tangled in legal claims.

Daniel disappeared from the records.

But he never stopped watching.

I thought of our first date.

The first time Daniel had asked about my family.

At the time, it had seemed like ordinary curiosity.

Now I remembered how quickly he had asked about the house.

Who owned it.

Whether there were other heirs.

Whether my father had left documents.

I had answered without suspicion.

Margaret saw my face.

“You remember.”

“Yes.”

She looked ashamed.

“I should have warned you.”

“Yes.”

A car slowed outside.

Samuel immediately moved toward the window.

“Don't.”

Margaret stood.

“What?”

“Someone is watching the house.”

I looked through a narrow gap in the curtain.

The black sedan.

Again.

The same one.

Samuel's expression hardened.

“We leave through the back.”

Margaret shook her head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because they're not here for me.”

A man's voice came from outside.

“Claire.”

I froze.

Daniel.

Impossible.

He was in custody.

Samuel pulled the curtain closed.

The voice came again.

“Claire, I know you're inside.”

Margaret looked at me.

“That's not Daniel.”

I stared.

“What?”

She whispered.

“They're using a recording.”

The voice repeated.

“Come outside.”

Margaret reached for my hand.

“Do not answer.”

Samuel checked the back door.

Then his phone buzzed.

A message.

From Michael.

I'm coming.

Samuel showed me.

Another message followed.

Don't leave Margaret alone.

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

He didn't answer.

Then the front window shattered.

Glass exploded across the room.

We dropped.

Someone had fired from outside.

Margaret screamed.

Samuel pulled me behind the sofa.

Noah grabbed my arm.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

Margaret was bleeding from her forehead.

“I'm fine.”

Another shot struck the wall.

Samuel shouted, “Stay down!”

The black sedan accelerated away.

Silence followed.

Then sirens sounded in the distance.

Margaret looked at me.

Her face was pale.

“They know we have the ledger.”

“No,” I said.

She looked confused.

I held up the photograph.

“They know we have this.”

Samuel stared at it.

Then his phone buzzed again.

One message.

They know about Michael.

I looked at Margaret.

She closed her eyes.

For the first time, she looked truly afraid.
