Marcus replayed the footage.
Colin entered the housekeeping corridor at 4:18 the previous afternoon. He carried the black case against his hip and glanced twice toward the elevators before slipping inside. The corridor was empty.
He opened the case.
Inside were several small velvet pouches and a handful of jewelry boxes.
Then he removed one tiny object and held it between his fingers.
The diamond earring.
I felt my stomach turn.
"He put it there," I said.
Marcus nodded.
"Yes."
Richard stepped closer to the monitor.
"Why?"
Nobody answered.
Marcus continued the footage.
Colin walked toward the supply closet. He opened the door with a key.
I stared at the screen.
"How did he get that?"
Marcus paused.
"That's another problem."
The key he used wasn't a housekeeping key.
It was a master access card.
My master access card.
At least, the footage showed a card with the same access profile.
I looked at Marcus.
"Mine was in my locker."
"I checked."
"Then how?"
Marcus brought up the access records.
The card had been used at 4:17.
I hadn't been anywhere near the closet.
"I was upstairs."
"I know."
Richard's face had gone pale.
"Colin had access to your card?"
"I don't know."
Marcus rubbed his jaw.
"Maybe he copied the credentials."
"Can someone do that?"
"Not easily."
He looked at the screen again.
"But it can happen."
The three of us stood there in silence.
The earring had been planted.
Someone had used credentials associated with my access.
And Colin had deliberately placed it inside the closet I was responsible for.
It was no longer simply about Vanessa accusing me.
Someone had taken steps to make the accusation look convincing.
I looked at Richard.
"You knew this might happen."
His expression tightened.
"I suspected something."
"You suspected someone would frame me?"
"I suspected Colin was trying to create evidence against somebody."
"Why?"
Richard looked toward the security office door.
"Because Vanessa's missing earring wasn't the only thing he was looking for."
I waited.
He continued.
"Colin had been working for Vanessa for almost two years. He handled deliveries, jewelry shipments, appointments, and private errands."
"Then why would he steal from her?"
"Because he knew exactly what she owned."
That made sense in the worst possible way.
A person trusted with expensive things didn't need to guess where valuables were kept.
Richard told us that several months earlier, Vanessa had discovered that one of her earrings was missing after a private dinner. She had searched the house and questioned everyone who worked there.
Nothing turned up.
Then Princess swallowed the other earring.
Vanessa had assumed the missing piece had been misplaced.
But recently, she had begun to suspect someone had taken it.
"Why did she think Colin had it?" I asked.
"Because he was the only person who knew about the set."
I looked at Marcus.
"And instead of investigating him, she suspected other people."
Richard gave a tired nod.
"Vanessa doesn't like being wrong."
The sentence sounded less like criticism now and more like exhaustion.
Marcus rewound the footage.
"There's something else."
Colin left the closet at 4:21.
He didn't go back toward the lobby.
He walked toward the eighth-floor elevators.
The camera followed him.
He rode upstairs.
Then disappeared from the security view.
"What was he doing up there?" I asked.
Marcus switched cameras.
At 4:29, Colin entered Room 826.
I stared.
"How?"
Marcus checked the access log.
"He used another credential."
"Whose?"
Marcus looked at the screen.
"Vanessa's."
Richard cursed under his breath.
"She gave him access."
"Apparently."
The footage showed Colin inside the room for almost six minutes.
When he came out, he was carrying the black case.
He went downstairs.
Then he planted the earring in the supply closet.
I felt cold despite the warm room.
"Why would he plant it after entering their room?"
Richard stared at the screen.
"Because he wanted the hotel to find it."
Marcus nodded.
"Exactly."
I understood.
The missing earring wasn't simply evidence.
It was bait.
If the hotel discovered it in my supply closet, the story would become simple.
Housekeeper.
Missing jewelry.
Evidence found among her supplies.
Dismissal.
Police.
Vanessa would have another person to blame.
And Colin would disappear into the background.
"He's trying to frame me," I whispered.
Marcus looked at me.
"Yes."
Richard closed his eyes.
"I should have stopped this sooner."
I turned toward him.
"How long have you suspected him?"
"Not long enough."
"That's not an answer."
He looked at me.
"I noticed money disappearing from Vanessa's accounts."
"How much?"
"Not enough to attract immediate attention."
That made the situation worse.
"Colin?"
Richard nodded.
"Small withdrawals. Purchases that didn't make sense. Jewelry repairs that Vanessa never requested."
"Why didn't you tell her?"
"I did."
"And?"
"She accused me of trying to control her."
I let out a slow breath.
"What about the missing earring?"
"Colin knew Vanessa was looking for it. He used that fear."
Marcus pointed at the screen.
"Then why plant it here?"
Richard answered before I could.
"Because he needed someone else to carry the blame."
The room went quiet.
Then Marcus's phone rang.
He answered.
"Security."
He listened.
His expression changed.
"What?"
A pause.
"Don't touch anything."
He hung up.
"What happened?" I asked.
"Housekeeping found something else."
"Where?"
"Room 826."
We went upstairs.
The door was sealed temporarily.
Marcus opened it with security authorization.
The room looked ordinary.
Fresh carpet.
White curtains.
Polished furniture.
But the nightstand drawer was open.
Inside was a small empty velvet box.
Richard recognized it.
"That belonged to Vanessa."
Marcus photographed it.
"What's it for?"
Richard picked up the edge of the drawer without touching the box.
"Her missing earring set."
I looked at him.
"So Colin took the other earring from here."
"Maybe."
Marcus crouched near the carpet.
"There."
A tiny thread was caught against the baseboard.
Dark blue.
The same color as Colin's jacket.
It wasn't proof by itself.
But it was another piece.
Then I noticed something.
"Wait."
I pointed beneath the nightstand.
There was a faint scratch on the floor.
Someone had dragged something heavy.
Marcus photographed it.
Richard stared at the mark.
"I've never seen that."
"Could have been the case," I said.
Marcus nodded.
"Possibly."
We searched the room carefully.
Nothing else.
Then Marcus found a small piece of adhesive tape beneath the nightstand.
He held it up.
There was a faint impression in the center.
A rectangular outline.
"Something was taped underneath."
Richard looked at me.
"The ring?"
"No."
I shook my head.
"The ring was inside Princess."
Marcus looked thoughtful.
"Then what was hidden here?"
We didn't know.
That evening, Colin didn't return to the hotel.
Marcus called the police.
This time, there was no need for me to be afraid.
I had footage.
Access records.
The planted earring.
A witness.
And a man who had been recorded entering the supply closet.
Still, I couldn't relax.
Because I had learned something important.
Evidence could clear a person.
It could also be manufactured to destroy one.
The next morning, Colin appeared at the hotel.
He walked through the lobby as if nothing had happened.
Marcus saw him first.
He called me.
"He's here."
My hands went cold.
"Why?"
"I don't know."
We watched from the security office.
Colin approached the front desk.
Then he looked directly toward the security camera.
The same deliberate glance.
The same calm expression.
He knew we were watching.
Marcus whispered.
"He's not afraid."
Colin took out his phone.
A moment later, mine rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
"Hello?"
Silence.
Then a man's voice.
"Stop looking."
I froze.
"Who is this?"
The line went dead.
Marcus stared at me.
"Was that him?"
I nodded.
He immediately called the police again.
Downstairs, Colin turned toward the exit.
But before he reached the doors, Richard stepped in front of him.
I watched through the monitor.
They spoke.
Colin's face changed.
Richard pointed toward the security office.
Colin looked up.
Then he smiled.
Not nervously.
Almost knowingly.
And that was when I realized he had never been trying only to frame me.
He wanted us to know he was there.
He wanted us to follow him.
Because whatever he was hiding was bigger than one stolen earring.
