Richard brought Colin into a private conference room.
Marcus stayed outside with security.
I remained near the door.
I didn't want to be part of the confrontation, but I also wasn't willing to let another conversation happen without witnesses.
Colin sat at the table.
He looked completely composed.
Richard stood across from him.
"Why did you plant the earring?"
Colin shrugged.
"I didn't."
Marcus placed printed photographs on the table.
The first showed Colin entering the housekeeping corridor.
The second showed him opening the supply closet.
The third showed the earring in his hand.
Colin's expression didn't change.
"Those images are blurry."
"They're clear enough."
"You can't prove what's in my hand."
Marcus placed another photograph down.
This one showed the earring clearly.
Colin finally looked uneasy.
Richard leaned forward.
"You've been stealing from Vanessa."
Colin laughed softly.
"That's what you think."
"Money."
"No."
"Jewelry."
"No."
"Then why were you searching her room?"
Colin looked at him.
"Because she asked me to."
Richard went still.
I stared through the doorway.
"She asked you to search the room?"
Colin looked toward me.
"She asked me to find something."
"What?"
He smiled faintly.
"The truth."
The answer irritated me.
"You don't get to call framing someone the truth."
He looked away.
Marcus stepped inside.
"Where is the missing earring?"
Colin didn't answer.
"Where is it?"
"I never had it."
Richard's jaw tightened.
"Then why were you in the room?"
"Because Vanessa believed someone had hidden something there."
"What?"
Colin looked at him.
"Proof."
"Proof of what?"
He hesitated.
Then said:
"That someone close to her had been stealing from her."
Richard stared.
"Who?"
Colin didn't answer.
Vanessa entered the room.
Nobody had heard her approach.
She stood in the doorway.
"Me."
Everyone turned.
She closed the door behind her.
"I asked Colin to search the room."
Richard looked stunned.
"You told me you didn't know where he was."
"I lied."
"Why?"
Vanessa looked at me.
Then down at the floor.
"Because I was afraid."
That was the first time I had heard her say those words.
She sat.
"My jewelry collection has been disappearing."
Richard said nothing.
"Not all at once. One piece here. Another months later. Sometimes I thought I had misplaced things."
She looked at Colin.
"Then I noticed the money."
Colin remained silent.
"I thought he was stealing."
"Then why did you keep him?"
Vanessa looked at Richard.
"Because I wasn't sure."
She folded her hands.
"And because I didn't want to believe someone I trusted could do that."
Richard shook his head.
"Then why accuse Rachel?"
Vanessa's face tightened.
"I didn't know what else to do."
"That isn't an excuse."
"I know."
She looked at me.
"I was wrong."
I didn't respond.
Colin leaned back.
"You see? She knew something was missing."
Marcus looked at him.
"That doesn't explain the planted earring."
Colin was quiet.
Then he said:
"I planted it."
Vanessa's face changed.
"Why?"
"Because I needed everyone looking in the wrong direction."
Richard stared.
"Why?"
Colin finally looked at him.
"Because you were getting close."
"To what?"
Colin's eyes moved toward Vanessa.
"To your own house."
Nobody spoke.
He continued.
"Someone inside your household has been taking things."
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"Who?"
Colin shook his head.
"That's the part you don't want to hear."
"Tell me."
"Your niece."
Vanessa froze.
"My niece?"
Colin nodded.
"She has been borrowing jewelry without permission."
"Borrowing?"
"Taking it. Selling some. Pawning others."
Vanessa stared at him.
"You're lying."
"I have records."
He reached into his jacket.
Marcus immediately stepped forward.
"Slowly."
Colin pulled out a folder.
Inside were pawnshop receipts, photographs, and copies of messages.
Vanessa's hands began to tremble as she read.
The receipts were in her niece's name.
Several pieces were unmistakably from Vanessa's collection.
Richard looked at the documents.
"When did you find these?"
"Three weeks ago."
"Why didn't you tell us?"
"Because I was investigating."
Vanessa looked up.
"Then why did you steal?"
"I didn't."
"You just admitted planting the earring."
"To force attention toward the theft."
"By framing Rachel."
Colin looked at me.
"Yes."
His admission was blunt.
No apology.
No excuse.
Just a fact.
I felt anger rise in my chest.
"You ruined my life for a plan that had nothing to do with me."
"I didn't expect you to be fired."
"You accused me."
"No."
He shook his head.
"Vanessa accused you."
I stared at him.
"You knew what would happen."
"I knew the hotel would investigate."
"You knew Vanessa would push for my dismissal."
He said nothing.
That silence was enough.
Richard stood.
"You're done."
Colin smiled.
"You think I'm the villain?"
"You planted evidence."
"Yes."
"You lied."
"Yes."
"You endangered an innocent woman."
Colin looked at me.
"I did."
He didn't deny any of it.
But there was something strange in his expression.
Not guilt.
Something closer to resignation.
Vanessa noticed it too.
"What aren't you telling us?"
Colin looked at her.
"The missing earring isn't the important part."
"Then what is?"
He took out another photograph.
It showed a storage cabinet inside Vanessa's home.
A small safe sat behind it.
Vanessa's face went pale.
"Where did you get that?"
"I found it."
"What is inside?"
"I don't know."
Richard looked at her.
"Why would Colin photograph your safe?"
Vanessa didn't answer.
She looked frightened again.
I suddenly understood why.
The stolen jewelry wasn't the only secret.
There was something in that safe.
Something she didn't want anyone to know about.
Colin stood.
"I've given you enough."
Marcus blocked the door.
"You aren't leaving."
Colin smiled.
"I expected that."
Then the conference room door opened.
A police officer entered.
He had arrived after Marcus's call.
Colin looked at him.
"Good."
The officer glanced around.
"Which one of you called?"
Marcus raised his hand.
"We have surveillance footage of evidence being planted."
The officer looked at Colin.
"Sir, you'll need to come with us."
Colin nodded.
Before leaving, he looked at Vanessa.
"Open the safe."
She didn't move.
"Why?"
"Because that's where this started."
Then he was gone.
Vanessa remained seated.
Richard turned toward her.
"What is in the safe?"
She shook her head.
"I don't know."
"You own it."
"I know."
"Then open it."
She looked at me.
"I can't."
I didn't understand.
"Why?"
Her voice became very small.
"Because the safe belongs to my father."
Richard stared.
"He died years ago."
"I know."
"Then why is it still locked?"
Vanessa looked down.
"Because I promised him I wouldn't open it."
Silence filled the room.
I expected some dramatic explanation.
Instead, Vanessa simply sat there.
A wealthy woman surrounded by expensive things, suddenly looking like someone afraid of an old promise.
The police officer returned.
"We need to discuss the planted evidence."
Vanessa nodded.
She stood.
Then stopped.
"Rachel."
I looked at her.
"I am sorry."
I said nothing.
"I was wrong about you."
"I know."
She swallowed.
"I will make sure everyone knows."
I looked at Richard.
He gave me a small nod.
The police took Colin away.
But the mystery remained.
That evening, Vanessa opened the safe.
The contents were not jewelry.
There were letters.
Photographs.
A bank statement.
And one old envelope addressed to Richard.
He opened it.
His face changed.
"What?"
He looked at Vanessa.
"Why did your father write my name?"
She shook her head.
"I don't know."
He handed me the letter.
I didn't read it.
It wasn't mine.
But the look on Richard's face told me the truth inside was going to change more than a missing earring.
