PART 6 – Olivia Knew My Name Before Ethan Ever Introduced Us, and the Old Recording Revealed Why She Had Been Watching Me

The recording ended with a soft click.

No one moved.

Olivia's voice remained in my head.

Claire was never supposed to find the second archive.

Not “the archive.”

The second archive.

That distinction mattered.

I looked at Daniel.

“How many are there?”

He shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Ethan stared at the floor.

“You knew she was involved.”

He didn't answer.

I turned toward him.

“Ethan.”

He finally looked at me.

“I knew Olivia had access to some of the records.”

“Some?”

“She helped me with the financial accounts.”

“And the archive?”

“I didn't know how much she knew.”

“You knew enough to be afraid of her.”

His silence told me I was right.

Margaret stood slowly.

“Why would Olivia know about Claire?”

Ethan rubbed his forehead.

“She found old records.”

“Where?”

“In my father's office.”

“When?”

“About two years ago.”

I felt my stomach tighten.

Two years.

The affair had begun eighteen months ago.

Olivia had found the records before she became involved with Ethan.

That meant she hadn't discovered the archive because of him.

She had discovered it independently.

Daniel walked toward the recorder.

“Can we access the rest?”

“There may be more tapes,” I said.

We searched the drawers.

The first held batteries.

The second contained old cables.

The third was empty.

The fourth had a label.

C.B.

My initials.

I pulled it out.

Inside was a photograph.

Me at seven years old.

I stared at it.

The picture had been taken outside my elementary school.

I remembered the day.

My father had picked me up early.

He told me we were going to visit someone.

I had forgotten the rest.

Until now.

Behind the photograph was a date.

Twenty years earlier.

Daniel looked at it.

“That matches the beginning of the archive.”

I nodded.

“But why was I photographed?”

Ethan approached.

“I think I know.”

I turned.

He looked exhausted.

“My father believed your father had taken something.”

“What?”

“A list.”

“What list?”

“Names.”

“Of whom?”

“People involved.”

I stared at him.

“And my father had it?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Ethan shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Daniel opened another drawer.

Inside was a handwritten ledger.

The first page contained dates.

The second contained names.

The third contained amounts.

Then I saw my father's name.

Beside it was another name.

Margaret.

Her name had been written twenty years earlier.

She stepped closer.

“What does that mean?”

I showed her.

She shook her head.

“I never knew.”

The ledger contained entries for meetings.

Payments.

Conversations.

At the bottom of one page was a note.

M.B. is unaware of the full arrangement.

Margaret stared at the words.

“I was being watched.”

“Yes.”

She looked at Ethan.

“You knew.”

“I knew there were records.”

“You knew they were watching me?”

“I didn't know how much.”

Her face tightened.

“You always have an excuse.”

He looked away.

I turned another page.

There it was.

My name.

Claire Bennett.

My maiden name.

Beside it was a single sentence.

Protected until marriage.

My hand went numb.

“Marriage?”

Daniel looked over my shoulder.

“That's important.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

I turned toward him.

“What does it mean?”

“I don't know.”

“Stop saying that.”

“I don't.”

“You knew my name before we met.”

“No.”

“The archive did.”

“That doesn't mean I did.”

I stared at him.

“Did you know my father?”

He hesitated.

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Our fathers knew each other.”

“That isn't what I asked.”

He looked at the photograph.

“I met your father when I was twenty-two.”

“And he knew who I was?”

“Yes.”

“Did he know I would marry you?”

“No.”

The answer came too quickly.

I noticed.

“So someone else expected it.”

Ethan didn't speak.

Daniel turned the ledger around.

A handwritten line had been added years later.

Ethan Blackwood — marriage to C.B. acceptable.

I felt something inside me go cold.

“Who wrote that?”

Ethan stared at the page.

“I don't know.”

Daniel examined the ink.

“This was added after the original entries.”

“When?”

“Hard to tell without analysis.”

The federal agent photographed the page.

“We'll have it examined.”

I looked at the recorder again.

“There may be another tape.”

We searched the room.

Behind the desk was a narrow compartment.

Inside was a cassette.

The label read:

OLIVIA — 2025.

Daniel frowned.

“That's recent.”

I inserted it.

Olivia's voice returned.

“I found the second archive.”

A pause.

“I wasn't supposed to.”

Another pause.

“I thought Ethan knew.”

She laughed softly.

“He didn't.”

Then her voice changed.

“He thinks he's using me.”

My eyes moved toward Ethan.

Olivia continued.

“He doesn't understand what his father left behind.”

There was a rustle.

Then she said my name.

“Claire.”

A pause.

“She is the key.”

I stopped the recording.

Ethan stared at me.

“What does that mean?”

“I was hoping you could tell me.”

“I can't.”

I pressed play again.

Olivia continued.

“She doesn't know what her father hid.”

“The Blackwoods think the archive belongs to them.”

“They're wrong.”

“The agreement belongs to someone else.”

Daniel leaned closer.

“Someone else?”

Olivia's voice dropped.

“The people who financed it.”

The recording stopped.

Everyone remained silent.

Daniel rewound the tape.

Nothing.

He played it again.

The final words were the same.

The people who financed it.

Margaret sat down.

“How much money?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Enough to build something this large?”

“More than enough.”

I thought of the old records.

The property companies.

The offshore accounts.

The shell corporations.

The archive.

Everything had been connected.

But there was another question.

“If Olivia knew this, why did she stay with Ethan?”

Ethan answered quietly.

“Because she was afraid.”

I looked at him.

“You sound certain.”

“I heard her say it.”

“When?”

“Three weeks ago.”

“What did she say?”

“She told me if she walked away, they would kill her.”

The room went silent.

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Who?”

Ethan shook his head.

“She didn't say.”

“Did you believe her?”

“Yes.”

“Enough to keep working with her?”

“I didn't know what else to do.”

I looked at him.

“You could have told me.”

He looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you?”

“Because by then, they already knew about you.”

The words landed heavily.

“Who knew?”

Ethan looked toward the photograph of my seven-year-old self.

“Everyone.”

I stepped back.

“What do you mean everyone?”

“The people behind the archive.”

He swallowed.

“They've known about you since you were a child.”

The federal agent immediately began gathering the tapes.

“We're taking everything.”

I nodded.

Then I noticed something on the wall.

A small red light.

Blinking.

Once.

Twice.

Then continuously.

Daniel saw it.

“What is that?”

Ethan's face went white.

“The archive alarm.”

“Why is it active?”

He looked at me.

“Because someone has accessed the system remotely.”

The computer terminal suddenly turned on.

A message appeared.

YOU FOUND THE WRONG DOOR.

Then another line appeared beneath it.

OLIVIA IS WAITING.

The screen went black.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Nobody spoke.

Then Olivia whispered,

“Claire, don't trust Ethan.”

The line went dead.
