PART 8 – The Photograph From Before My Marriage Led to a Hidden Meeting Place, Where Olivia Finally Explained Who Had Been Pulling the Strings

We did not go to the airfield alone.

Daniel made that clear.

“You're not walking into an unknown location because a frightened woman wrote four words on the back of a photograph.”

I looked at him.

“She has my father's final file.”

“Or she wants you to believe she does.”

Ethan stood near the doorway.

“She'll kill you.”

I turned.

“You seem remarkably certain.”

“Because I know Olivia.”

“You thought you knew her.”

He had no answer.

The federal agent stepped closer.

“We'll arrange surveillance.”

I shook my head.

“If she sees federal vehicles, she won't come.”

“She may not come anyway.”

“Then we lose the only person who claims to know what my father hid.”

Daniel studied me.

“You're determined.”

“Yes.”

He nodded reluctantly.

“Then we do it carefully.”

The private airfield was forty minutes outside the city.

Rain had stopped.

The runway was wet and silver beneath the afternoon sky.

We parked two buildings away.

I wore a plain coat.

No jewelry.

No wedding ring.

The ring remained in my pocket.

I had stopped wearing it before leaving the estate.

Daniel watched the terminal through binoculars.

“She should be here.”

“She said she'd come.”

“People say many things when they're afraid.”

I looked at the empty runway.

Then I saw a woman step from behind a hangar.

Olivia.

She looked nothing like the photographs.

No designer clothes.

No confident smile.

Her hair was pulled back.

She wore a dark coat.

She kept looking over her shoulder.

When she saw me, she stopped.

I stepped forward.

Daniel followed at a distance.

Olivia immediately shook her head.

“Alone.”

I looked back.

“He stays.”

She swallowed.

“Fine.”

She approached.

Up close, she looked exhausted.

“How long have you known?”

She stared at me.

“About you?”

“Yes.”

“Since before your wedding.”

“Why?”

“Because your father asked me to watch you.”

The answer stunned me.

“My father?”

She nodded.

“He found me when I was twenty-four.”

“What did he tell you?”

“That the Blackwoods were watching you.”

“Why would they?”

“Because of what your mother knew.”

My stomach tightened.

“You knew my mother?”

“No.”

“But you knew what happened to her.”

Olivia looked away.

“I knew what they said happened.”

“And what really happened?”

“She was killed.”

The word was simple.

Flat.

I felt the world narrow around it.

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I don't expect anything.”

She pulled a small envelope from inside her coat.

“This is your father's file.”

I reached for it.

She didn't let go.

“Before I give it to you, you need to understand something.”

“What?”

“The conspiracy didn't start with Ethan's father.”

I waited.

“It started with three men.”

“My father.”

“Ethan's father.”

“And Thomas Vale.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Vale was the attorney.”

Olivia nodded.

“He wasn't just their lawyer.”

“He financed the archive.”

“With whose money?”

“Investors.”

“Which investors?”

Olivia looked toward the runway.

“People who wanted influence without fingerprints.”

She finally released the envelope.

I opened it.

Inside was a list.

Names.

Companies.

Dates.

Amounts.

The earliest entry was dated twenty-two years ago.

Daniel examined it.

“This matches the archive records.”

Olivia nodded.

“Of course it does.”

“Why?”

“Because the archive was built to protect the people who paid for it.”

I looked at the names.

Some belonged to corporations.

Some belonged to wealthy individuals.

One belonged to a law firm I recognized from my father's old papers.

Another belonged to a foundation.

Then I saw my father's name.

Beside it was an amount.

Zero.

“He never took money.”

Olivia shook her head.

“No.”

“Then why was he involved?”

“He believed he could use the system to expose the people abusing it.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Did he succeed?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because he discovered the system had already been compromised.”

I stared at the list.

“By whom?”

Olivia's face changed.

“Your father's own protection.”

“What does that mean?”

“He created a secret failsafe.”

My heart began beating faster.

“What failsafe?”

“Every person who participated in the archive was assigned a code.”

“If the system detected betrayal, the files would automatically release.”

“To whom?”

“Everyone.”

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“That would explain the leverage.”

Olivia nodded.

“But there was one problem.”

“What?”

“The failsafe needed an heir.”

I stared at her.

“Me.”

“Yes.”

“Why me?”

“Because your father trusted you.”

“He didn't tell me.”

“He couldn't.”

“Why?”

“Because if you knew, they could force the information out of you.”

I looked down at the papers.

The pieces began to connect.

My father's secrecy.

The surveillance.

The archive.

My marriage.

Ethan's father.

Olivia.

But one piece still didn't fit.

“Why Ethan?”

Olivia's eyes lowered.

“Because the Blackwoods needed you close.”

“For protection?”

“No.”

“For access.”

I stared at her.

“What access?”

“Your father's bloodline.”

Daniel went still.

Olivia continued.

“The failsafe recognizes family.”

“Your father designed it so only his child could activate the final archive.”

“That is why the Blackwoods wanted you married to Ethan.”

I felt cold.

“They arranged my marriage?”

“Not exactly.”

She looked at me.

“But they made sure the conditions existed.”

Ethan had been chosen to inherit the archive.

I had been chosen to inherit the key.

Together, they believed they could control both.

Except my father had anticipated them.

He had hidden the final access code somewhere they couldn't reach.

I looked at the envelope.

“Where is the code?”

Olivia shook her head.

“I don't know.”

“Then what is this?”

She pointed to the final page.

“Read the last line.”

I did.

The key belongs to the person who refuses to use it for revenge.

I stared at the sentence.

Daniel read it over my shoulder.

“That sounds like your father.”

“It is.”

Olivia stepped backward.

“There is one more thing.”

“What?”

“The people who funded the archive know the federal investigation has started.”

“So?”

“They're going to destroy everything.”

“Can they?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“By triggering the failsafe.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“That would release every file.”

Olivia nodded.

“And every person connected to it would be exposed.”

“Then why would they do that?”

“Because they believe they can survive the fallout.”

“And we can't?”

“They can.”

She looked directly at me.

“You are the only person they cannot predict.”

I heard a car approaching.

Olivia turned.

“They found me.”

Daniel reached for his weapon.

The federal agents moved from their hidden positions.

Two SUVs appeared beyond the hangar.

Olivia stepped toward me.

“Don't let Ethan access the final archive.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because he doesn't know what his father left there.”

The SUVs stopped.

Doors opened.

Men in dark coats stepped out.

Olivia backed away.

“Go.”

“Come with us.”

“I can't.”

“Olivia.”

She shook her head.

“They'll follow me.”

Daniel moved toward her.

“We can protect you.”

She smiled sadly.

“You don't understand.”

“What?”

“They've already reached the archive.”

My phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

FROM THE BLACKWOOD ARCHIVE.

LEVEL TWO ACCESS ACTIVATED.

I looked at Daniel.

He read the screen.

Then his face changed.

“We have to go.”

I looked at Olivia.

“Who activated it?”

She whispered,

“Ethan.”

My heart sank.

We had left him under federal supervision.

He should not have been able to reach the system.

Yet the message was undeniable.

Someone had opened Level Two.

And if Olivia was telling the truth, the final archive had just been exposed.

We ran toward the vehicles.

Behind us, Olivia disappeared between the hangars.

I wanted to follow her.

But Daniel grabbed my arm.

“Claire.”

I turned.

“Your husband just opened the one door your father spent twenty years keeping closed.”

We drove back toward the estate.

Rain began falling again.

The Blackwood mansion appeared in the distance.

Every window was dark.

Then, as we approached the gates, the lights came on.

One floor at a time.

First the basement.

Then the first floor.

Then the upper rooms.

Finally, the attic.

Every light in the house burned simultaneously.

My phone vibrated again.

A second message appeared.

CLAIRE BENNETT.

ACCESS CONFIRMED.

Then another.

WELCOME HOME.
