I read the handwritten page again.
Tobias Reed.
His name appeared beneath the words “Final leverage plan.”
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
Colton stood on the other side of my desk, watching me.
“What does it say?” he asked.
I turned the page toward him.
His face changed.
“I didn't know about that.”
“You said you found the folder.”
“I found the laptop. I opened the main directory. I saw your name and stopped.”
“You didn't see this?”
“No.”
I kept reading.
The handwriting was Briana's.
There were dates beside several entries.
One referred to my work schedule.
Another listed Tobias's employer.
Another mentioned a dinner reservation.
Then, beside a date three weeks away, Briana had written: “Pressure through relationship.”
That was all.
No explanation.
No details.
Somehow that made it worse.
I called my security consultant.
He arrived within the hour.
We went through the laptop together, preserving everything before anyone touched another file.
The consultant found photographs, spreadsheets, contact information, property records, and notes about people connected to me.
There were entries about my parents.
My attorney.
My financial adviser.
Mara.
Even Tobias's sister.
Briana had gathered enough information to understand exactly who mattered to me.
The folder about Tobias was not extensive.
That bothered me.
It meant she hadn't needed much.
She knew where he worked.
She knew where he lived.
She knew where we had dinner.
She knew his weekly schedule.
She knew that I trusted him.
The consultant looked at me.
“She was building leverage.”
“I know.”
“Do you know what kind?”
I shook my head.
He tapped the screen.
“Could be reputation. Could be financial. Could be something designed to frighten you.”
“Can we find out?”
“Maybe.”
The next morning, Tobias sat across from me in my office.
I told him everything.
He didn't interrupt.
When I finished, he leaned back.
“So she was watching me.”
“Yes.”
“And you think I'm in danger.”
“I don't know.”
“That isn't the same as no.”
“No.”
He looked toward the window.
For a while, he said nothing.
Then he asked, “What do you want me to do?”
“Nothing yet.”
“Vanessa.”
“I need to know what the plan is before we react.”
He nodded.
“I trust you.”
Those four words nearly broke me.
Not because they were romantic.
Because they were so simple.
He trusted me without demanding proof.
He trusted me without expecting something in return.
I had spent years around people who treated trust as currency.
Tobias treated it as a choice.
My investigator traced the photographs.
Several had been taken from public places.
Others were different.
One had been taken from across the street from Tobias's apartment.
Another showed his car.
A third showed the entrance to his office.
There was no sign of forced entry or physical surveillance equipment.
Whoever had taken them had simply watched.
That frightened me more than a hidden camera would have.
Watching required patience.
Patience required intention.
The investigator contacted local police and provided the evidence.
A detective joined the case.
She reviewed the laptop and asked me questions about Briana.
“How long did you know her?”
“About three years.”
“Did she ever threaten you directly?”
“No.”
“Did she ever threaten Tobias?”
“No.”
“Did she know where he lived?”
“Yes.”
The detective studied the photographs.
“Then we're going to assume the possibility of escalation.”
She recommended additional precautions.
We followed every one.
Tobias changed his routine.
I stopped going to predictable restaurants.
Mara became responsible for checking visitors before they reached my office.
My parents agreed to install cameras around their rental.
For once, nobody argued.
Even my father admitted he had underestimated Briana.
Then the investigator called.
“We found the source of the photographs.”
“Who?”
“Kendra.”
My stomach tightened.
“Are you sure?”
“She admitted taking some of them.”
“Why?”
“She says Briana paid her.”
“How much?”
“Five thousand dollars.”
I closed my eyes.
“For photographs?”
“Some were worth more than others.”
“What did Briana tell her?”
“That she needed information about Tobias.”
“Why?”
Kendra claimed she didn't know.
I didn't believe her.
The detective didn't either.
She pressed Kendra harder.
Eventually, Kendra admitted Briana had been trying to find a way to make Tobias appear financially compromised.
That was the plan.
Not physical violence.
Not kidnapping.
Something more calculated.
Briana wanted to manufacture evidence that Tobias had received money from me improperly.
If she could create the appearance of a secret financial relationship, she could use it against me.
The idea was almost elegant in its cruelty.
She knew my career depended on credibility.
She knew executives were scrutinized.
She knew a fabricated conflict of interest could damage my position.
And she knew I cared about Tobias enough that a threat involving him would force me to react emotionally.
I asked the detective whether Briana had succeeded.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because she made a mistake.”
“What mistake?”
“She underestimated how much evidence she was leaving behind.”
That afternoon, we found the mistake.
A bank transfer.
Briana had paid Kendra from an account connected to one of the shell companies.
The payment reference contained a phrase.
“Reputation project.”
I stared at it.
The investigator enlarged the transaction.
There were six previous payments with similar descriptions.
Five went to people I didn't recognize.
One went to a private investigator.
Briana had been researching me for months.
Not just my money.
My reputation.
My relationships.
My company.
My family.
Everything.
I asked whether the private investigator had been identified.
“Yes.”
“Who hired them?”
“Briana.”
“Can we question them?”
“They're cooperating.”
The private investigator had been hired to find vulnerabilities.
He had compiled a report.
The report was twenty-eight pages long.
I read every page.
There were no scandals.
No secret debts.
No criminal history.
Nothing useful.
The only thing he had flagged was my relationship with Tobias.
“Why?”
The investigator answered.
“Because you had no obvious financial weaknesses.”
I looked at the report.
Briana couldn't control me through money anymore.
So she had moved toward the people I loved.
That was the weakness she believed I couldn't protect.
The next discovery was even more disturbing.
Briana had contacted Tobias directly.
Not recently.
Six weeks earlier.
She had used a fake name.
She claimed to be researching architectural projects and asked questions about his work.
Tobias remembered the conversation.
“I thought she was a potential client.”
“Did she meet you?”
“No.”
“Did she ask personal questions?”
He thought.
“She asked whether I traveled for work.”
I felt cold.
“What else?”
“Whether I worked late.”
I looked at him.
He nodded slowly.
“I didn't think anything of it.”
Neither of us spoke.
The detective took the information.
Then she said something that changed our understanding of the entire plan.
“She wasn't preparing to attack him.”
“Then what?”
“She was preparing to make him disappear.”
Tobias frowned.
“Disappear?”
“Not physically.”
The detective explained.
Briana intended to manufacture evidence that Tobias had taken money from me and then fled after being confronted.
She could use forged transfers, fabricated messages, and false statements.
The goal was to create a crisis.
Then she would approach me with an offer.
Money in exchange for silence.
I felt something click.
“She wanted me to pay.”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
The detective looked at the financial records.
“Five million.”
I almost laughed.
After everything, she still believed the answer was money.
The investigator showed me a spreadsheet.
There it was.
A demand.
Five million dollars.
In exchange for “proof disappearing.”
But the proof didn't exist.
She intended to create it first.
I closed the laptop.
“She thought I'd pay.”
“She knows you care about your reputation,” the detective said.
“She knew my family would panic.”
“She knew you'd try to protect Tobias.”
I looked at the spreadsheet.
Then I noticed the date.
The demand was scheduled for three weeks from now.
The same date written on Briana's handwritten plan.
The plan was active.
Whatever Briana intended to do had not happened yet.
And we had just discovered it in time.
