PART 6 – The Evidence From Our House Suggested Christmas Had Been Only the Final Step in a Plan That Started Long Before I Ever Saw the Danger

I couldn't stop looking at the handwriting.

The letters were small and sharply angled.

Three words.

Find her assets.

I read them again.

Then again.

My father took the paper from me.

“You shouldn't be worrying about this right now.”

“Then why did you show me?”

“Because I don't want you blindsided later.”

I leaned back against the pillow.

“Do you think David was planning something?”

“I think we should let the investigators determine that.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“It is the answer I can give you honestly.”

I stared out the window.

Snow had begun falling lightly over the city.

Christmas decorations still hung from the buildings across the street.

Everything looked peaceful.

I knew better now.

The detectives returned that afternoon with a warrant for the house.

They had found more than the broken phone.

There were photographs.

Not family photographs.

Documents.

Copies of financial records.

A folder with my name on it.

I listened without speaking as Detective Ortiz explained.

“They were stored in a locked cabinet in David's office.”

“Why would he have them?”

“That is what we're trying to establish.”

“What documents?”

“Property records. Old tax documents. Insurance information.”

I looked at my father.

“My name wasn't on most of those.”

Ortiz nodded.

“That's why it concerns us.”

He placed several photocopies on the table.

One showed a property my parents owned.

Another showed an investment account.

Another showed a charitable foundation associated with my father's name.

None belonged to me.

But someone had marked portions of each document.

Yellow highlighter.

Dates.

Numbers.

Connections.

It looked like someone had been assembling a map.

“Who had access to these?” I asked.

“That's what we're determining.”

“Could David have obtained them legally?”

“Some could have been found through public records.”

“And the others?”

Ortiz looked at Pierce.

“Some were not publicly available.”

My father leaned forward.

“Then someone provided them.”

“Yes.”

I felt cold.

“Who?”

“We don't know yet.”

Detective Pierce slid another page toward me.

“This is where things become more complicated.”

It was an email.

The sender had used an address I didn't recognize.

The subject line read: RE: THORNE FAMILY.

I read the message.

It was short.

No greeting.

No signature.

Just a sentence.

“She will eventually inherit everything, so don't underestimate the value of the marriage.”

I looked up.

“My marriage?”

Pierce nodded.

“That's what it appears to say.”

I couldn't breathe for a second.

David had never asked about my inheritance directly.

He had asked about my parents.

Their properties.

Their friends.

Their influence.

I had assumed he was merely curious.

Now those questions looked like pieces of something much larger.

“Do you know when this was sent?”

“Fourteen months ago.”

That was before I became pregnant.

Before the Christmas assault.

Before most of the arguments.

I stared at the email.

“Who received it?”

“An account associated with someone named Richard Vale.”

My father went still.

I noticed immediately.

“Dad?”

He didn't answer.

“Who is Richard Vale?”

My father rubbed his thumb against the edge of the table.

“An attorney.”

“Your attorney?”

“Formerly.”

“What does that mean?”

“He worked with my chambers years ago.”

I frowned.

“Is he connected to David?”

“We're checking.”

Pierce looked between us.

“Does the name mean something to you?”

My father hesitated.

“Yes.”

“What?”

“He represented a party in a case that came before me.”

“Was there a conflict?”

“No.”

“Then why does he matter?”

“Because he was removed from the matter after attempting to contact members of my family.”

I looked at my father.

“When?”

“Before you met David.”

My stomach tightened.

“You never told me.”

“I didn't think it mattered.”

“Apparently it did.”

He nodded.

The detectives collected the documents.

Before leaving, Pierce turned to me.

“We also found evidence that someone searched your name repeatedly from David's office computer.”

“How far back?”

“Almost two years.”

I looked at my father.

Two years.

That meant David had started searching before he became distant.

Before I noticed the change.

Before I became pregnant.

“What was he searching?”

Pierce gave me a list.

My father's name.

My mother's name.

Property records.

Court decisions.

Family trusts.

My childhood address.

I read every line.

My hands began trembling.

“Why would he do this?”

Pierce didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

The implication was obvious.

David hadn't simply married into a family he didn't understand.

He might have been investigating what he could gain from it.

When the detectives left, I sat silently.

My father remained beside me.

“I want to know everything.”

“You may not like what we find.”

“I already lost my child.”

My voice cracked.

“I don't think there is anything left for him to take from me.”

My father looked at me.

“There is always something people think they can take.”

That night, I couldn't sleep.

At two in the morning, my father's phone rang.

He stepped into the hallway.

I watched through the half-open door.

His expression changed.

When he returned, I knew immediately that something had happened.

“What?”

He sat beside me.

“David's attorney contacted me.”

“Why?”

“He wants to negotiate.”

“Negotiate what?”

“Your statement.”

I stared at him.

“He wants me to withdraw the allegation?”

“Yes.”

“Why would I?”

“He says David will accept responsibility for preventing you from calling for help, but he disputes the assault.”

I laughed once.

There was nothing funny about it.

“He's still lying.”

“Yes.”

“What else?”

My father hesitated.

“He says Sylvia pushed you accidentally.”

“Of course.”

“He also claims you have been unstable since becoming pregnant.”

I closed my eyes.

“That's what he told me in the kitchen.”

My father said nothing.

I remembered David standing over me.

You're emotional.

You're confused.

No one will believe you.

He had already decided what story he wanted everyone to hear.

He had simply failed to account for witnesses.

Mark.

The paramedics.

The broken phone.

The blood.

The hospital records.

And my father.

The next morning, Detective Pierce called.

“We found something else.”

My pulse quickened.

“What?”

“Security footage.”

“From the house?”

“No. From the neighboring property.”

I sat upright.

“What does it show?”

“Part of the kitchen is visible through the side window.”

I held my breath.

“Can you see the assault?”

“Not clearly.”

My heart sank.

“But we can see what happened immediately afterward.”

“What?”

“David moved your chair.”

I frowned.

“My chair?”

“The chair you said was missing from the dining table.”

I stared at the wall.

“Why?”

“We don't know yet.”

“What else?”

“He carried it from the dining room into the garage.”

I closed my eyes.

He hadn't merely failed to give me a seat.

He had physically removed it.

He had wanted me standing.

Why?

Detective Pierce continued.

“And there's more.”

I waited.

“The footage shows Sylvia standing over you after the fall.”

“She was there.”

“Yes.”

“Then what?”

“She looks toward the dining room.”

“What does that mean?”

“We enhanced the footage.”

My heartbeat quickened.

“What did you see?”

“A gesture.”

“What kind?”

Pierce hesitated.

“She touched two fingers to her lips.”

I didn't understand.

“Like she was telling someone to be quiet?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“She was signaling to David.”

A chill moved through me.

“What signal?”

“We're not sure.”

I looked toward the hospital door.

For three years I had thought my marriage had been slowly falling apart.

Now I wondered if it had been constructed around a secret I had never been allowed to see.

And the most frightening question was no longer why Sylvia had pushed me.

It was who had decided I needed to be removed from that kitchen in the first place.
