PART 8 – A Name From David’s Past Connected Him to My Father’s Oldest Legal Enemy, and Suddenly Our First Meeting Looked Nothing Like I Remembered

Richard Vale was found the next morning.

He wasn't hiding.

That was what frightened me.

Detective Pierce called to say they had located him at his office.

He had been practicing law under another firm for nearly two years.

“He agreed to speak with us,” she said.

“Did he admit anything?”

“Not yet.”

“Does he know about me?”

“Yes.”

I looked at my father.

“He knows?”

“He knew who you were before David met you.”

My father stood beside the window.

His shoulders were rigid.

“Dad.”

He turned.

“Tell me everything you know about him.”

“I told you enough to explain the connection.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“Not anymore.”

He was silent.

Then he said, “Richard Vale was one of the attorneys involved in a case that became very contentious.”

“What case?”

“A dispute involving a development company.”

“Why would that matter?”

“Because the company believed I had ruled against them unfairly.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Then what happened?”

“They appealed.”

“And lost.”

“Yes.”

My father sat down.

“Afterward, Vale became convinced that my decision had been influenced by information outside the record.”

I frowned.

“Was it?”

“No.”

“But he thought it was.”

“He thought I had personal reasons.”

“What personal reasons?”

My father looked at me.

“You.”

I felt cold.

“Me?”

“You were a teenager then.”

“I don't understand.”

“He believed my family had financial interests connected to the case.”

“We didn't.”

“No.”

“But he thought we did.”

“Yes.”

I stared at him.

“Why would he care about me?”

“Because you were the only member of my immediate family whose financial future was not publicly documented.”

I remembered the folder.

Find her assets.

My stomach turned.

“So he became interested in me.”

“Possibly.”

“Before I met David.”

“Yes.”

I looked away.

The pieces were beginning to connect.

Not cleanly.

Not completely.

But enough to frighten me.

Detective Pierce arrived later that afternoon.

She brought a photograph.

“This is Richard Vale.”

I recognized him immediately.

Not because I had met him.

Because I had seen him before.

At my wedding.

He had stood near the back of the church.

I had assumed he was one of David's colleagues.

I stared at the photograph.

“He was there.”

Pierce nodded.

“We believe so.”

My father leaned forward.

“Did David know him?”

“We're still establishing the relationship.”

I shook my head.

“He knew him.”

“How do you know?”

“I remember David introducing me to someone at the reception.”

I searched my memory.

“He called him Rick.”

Pierce wrote it down.

“Did he say anything else?”

“He said they had worked together.”

My father looked at me.

“David never mentioned him to me.”

“That may have been deliberate.”

Pierce opened her folder.

“We have another issue.”

I braced myself.

“Richard Vale's firm represented a company connected to David before David met you.”

“How connected?”

“David worked on several matters for them.”

I stared at the floor.

“Did Richard introduce us?”

“We're investigating.”

That possibility made my skin crawl.

I remembered our first meeting.

A restaurant.

A mutual acquaintance.

David had seemed almost too interested in me.

He had asked about my childhood.

Where I grew up.

What my parents did.

I had thought it was romantic.

Now every question sounded like an interview.

“There's something else,” Pierce said.

She placed a phone record on the table.

David had called Richard Vale repeatedly during the months before our wedding.

“How many times?”

“Forty-three.”

I closed my eyes.

“Did he call him after our wedding?”

“Yes.”

“How often?”

“Twenty-seven times in the first year.”

My father stared at the records.

“That's not casual contact.”

“No,” Pierce agreed.

“What were they discussing?”

“We don't know yet.”

“Can you get the messages?”

“We're trying.”

I looked at her.

“What about the company?”

“We traced payments.”

“To Richard?”

“To a corporate account.”

“Whose?”

Pierce paused.

“It's connected to a trust.”

My heart started pounding.

“What trust?”

She looked at my father.

“The Thorne Family Trust.”

I couldn't speak.

My father stood abruptly.

“That is impossible.”

Pierce nodded.

“We thought so too.”

“What does that mean?” I asked.

My father didn't answer.

Pierce explained.

“Someone attempted to access a trust-related account using credentials associated with a dormant legal entity.”

“Who controlled that entity?”

“We're still investigating.”

My father paced toward the window.

“I never authorized that.”

“I know.”

“Who had access?”

“That is what we need to determine.”

I looked at the detective.

“Could David?”

“Not directly.”

“But someone could have given him access.”

“Yes.”

I felt dizzy.

The investigation had begun with one assault.

Now it had reached into my father's professional life.

My marriage.

My inheritance.

And a legal battle from before I met my husband.

That evening, I received a message from an unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

Then I opened it.

There was no greeting.

Only one sentence.

You should have listened to your father the first time.

I showed my father.

His face hardened.

“Do not respond.”

“I won't.”

He immediately called the detectives.

Within minutes, the message had been preserved.

But another message arrived.

This one contained a photograph.

It was old.

My father and me.

I was seventeen.

We were standing outside the courthouse.

I remembered the day.

He had just been appointed to a judicial committee.

The photograph had never been published.

At least, not publicly.

My stomach dropped.

“Who has this?”

My father stared at it.

“I don't know.”

The next message arrived.

He should have told you why he was afraid.

I looked at my father.

“Afraid of what?”

He didn't answer.

“Dad.”

He sat down.

“I wanted to protect you.”

“From Richard?”

“From everyone involved.”

“What happened?”

He rubbed his forehead.

“There was a threat.”

“When?”

“Years ago.”

“Against me?”

“Against our family.”

I stared at him.

“You never told me.”

“You were young.”

“I deserved to know.”

“Yes.”

His voice broke slightly.

“I was wrong.”

“What did they threaten?”

He looked at me.

“They threatened to destroy your reputation and your future if I didn't change a ruling.”

I felt numb.

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Then what happened?”

“They disappeared.”

“Who?”

“The people behind the threat.”

I looked at the photograph again.

“Until now.”

My father nodded.

“Until now.”

The hospital room suddenly felt unsafe.

The walls seemed thinner.

The window seemed too large.

Every unknown person in the corridor felt like a potential threat.

But my father reached for my hand.

“This ends with the truth.”

I looked at him.

“I don't want to spend the rest of my life afraid.”

“You won't.”

“Promise?”

“I promise I will do everything I can.”

I squeezed his hand.

Then the door opened.

Detective Pierce stood there.

“We found the person who sent the messages.”

My heart jumped.

“Who?”

She looked at me.

“It's a number registered to a company.”

“What company?”

She hesitated.

“Vale Strategic Consulting.”

I stared at her.

“Richard Vale?”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“Someone else.”

“Who?”

She placed a photograph on the table.

I looked down.

The man in the picture was standing beside David at a charity event.

I had seen him before.

Many times.

He had attended our wedding.

He had visited David's office.

And he had once congratulated me on my pregnancy.

I knew him as David's closest business partner.

His name was Michael Grant.

Detective Pierce's voice was quiet.

“He isn't just David's business partner.”

I looked up.

“What is he?”

“He's the person who paid for the private investigator who followed you before your wedding.”

My blood ran cold.

And for the first time, I understood that the man who had been standing near David all these years had never really been standing on the sidelines.

He had been watching me from the beginning.
