Michael did not tell Liam about the call.
He told the investigator instead.
The voice had belonged to a woman.
The woman claimed to have been someone Emma had tried to protect.
That distinction mattered.
The investigator traced the number.
It was prepaid.
No useful registration information existed.
But the number had been active only briefly.
The call had originated from a public location.
Michael asked whether they could identify the woman.
“Not yet.”
“Then what do we do?”
“Wait.”
Michael hated waiting.
He had spent too many months waiting for answers that never came.
But this time, patience was necessary.
The next evening, the woman called again.
“Are you alone?”
Michael looked toward the hallway.
“Yes.”
“Is your son safe?”
Michael's grip tightened around the phone.
“Yes.”
“Good.”
“Who are you?”
“My name is Rachel.”
The name meant nothing.
“Rachel what?”
“I can't tell you yet.”
Michael closed his eyes.
“Then why call me?”
“Because Emma was right.”
“About what?”
“She knew Vanessa wasn't after your money.”
Michael sat down.
“Then what was she after?”
Rachel was silent for several seconds.
“Your family.”
Michael waited.
“That's not an answer.”
“I know.”
“Tell me where to meet you.”
Rachel gave him an address.
A small café across town.
She warned him not to bring anyone.
Michael ignored that instruction.
He told the investigator.
They arranged discreet protection.
Rachel arrived twenty minutes late.
She looked nervous.
Her hands shook as she placed them on the table.
Michael recognized fear.
Not theatrical fear.
The kind that made someone check the door before speaking.
“You knew Emma?”
Rachel nodded.
“She hired me.”
“For what?”
“I worked at the clinic where Vanessa went.”
Michael leaned forward.
“What clinic?”
“The family records office.”
Rachel looked down.
“Emma wanted to know why Vanessa was searching for Sarah.”
Michael's heart pounded.
“What did she find?”
“Vanessa wasn't looking for Sarah.”
Michael frowned.
“Then who?”
“Sarah's child.”
Silence.
Michael's mouth went dry.
“Where is the child?”
Rachel looked at him.
“You're looking at him.”
Michael stopped breathing.
He stared at her.
“That doesn't make sense.”
Rachel's eyes filled.
“Emma believed Liam was not your biological son.”
Michael pushed back from the table.
“No.”
“I know how it sounds.”
“No.”
“Emma was investigating the records before she died.”
Michael's mind rejected the words.
Liam was his son.
He had been there when he was born.
He remembered holding him.
He remembered Emma's exhaustion.
The tiny fingers.
The first cry.
There had never been doubt.
Rachel continued.
“Emma believed someone had altered the original records.”
Michael shook his head.
“Why would she believe that?”
“Because Sarah's child was born on the same date as Liam.”
Michael stared at her.
That was impossible.
Or it should have been.
Rachel reached into her bag.
She produced a copy of a medical record.
The birth time was different.
The mother's name was Sarah.
The father's name was blank.
Michael read the date.
The same date.
His hands trembled.
“Where did you get this?”
“Emma.”
Michael looked up.
“She gave it to me before she died.”
“Why didn't you come forward?”
“Because Vanessa found out.”
Rachel's voice dropped.
“She threatened me.”
Michael stared at the document.
“Did Emma know?”
“She knew enough.”
“What does that mean?”
“Emma suspected that Liam had been transferred between records.”
Michael couldn't speak.
The investigator, sitting several tables away, had already begun recording the conversation.
Rachel continued.
“There was another woman at the clinic.”
“Who?”
“Vanessa.”
Michael's jaw tightened.
“She had access to the records.”
Rachel nodded.
“She worked with someone in administration.”
“Daniel?”
“No.”
The answer stunned him.
“Then who?”
Rachel looked toward the door.
“I don't know his name.”
Michael stared at her.
“Then how do you know all this?”
“Because I saw them together.”
Rachel explained that Vanessa had accessed records belonging to Sarah and Liam.
She had also accessed Emma's medical information.
Michael felt sick.
“What was she trying to prove?”
“That Liam belonged to Sarah.”
Michael stared at the table.
“If Liam was Sarah's child, why would Emma have raised him?”
Rachel looked confused.
“Because Sarah was dead.”
Michael shook his head.
“Sarah died before Liam was born.”
Rachel hesitated.
“No.”
Michael looked up.
Rachel whispered, “Sarah died after the baby was born.”
The statement hit him like a blow.
Michael had been told Sarah died before the birth.
Who had told him?
Emma.
Or someone else?
He couldn't remember.
Rachel slid another document across the table.
It was an old death certificate.
The date was different from what Michael remembered.
Michael's hands went numb.
Sarah had lived for several months after Liam's birth.
Long enough to know where her child went.
Long enough to become a problem for someone.
“Where is Sarah buried?”
Rachel gave him the cemetery.
Michael already knew.
He had attended the funeral.
Or thought he had.
Suddenly memories became uncertain.
He remembered rain.
Black umbrellas.
Emma crying.
But he remembered almost nothing about the coffin.
The investigator approached.
“We need to stop here.”
Rachel looked frightened.
“Please.”
The investigator reassured her.
“You're safe.”
Rachel shook her head.
“No. I'm not.”
She looked at Michael.
“You don't understand.”
“What?”
“Vanessa wasn't the person in charge.”
Michael felt the air leave his lungs.
“Who was?”
Rachel stood.
“I don't know.”
Then she left.
The investigator followed.
Michael remained at the table.
He looked at the documents.
His entire understanding of his family had shifted.
But one thing remained certain.
Liam was his son in every way that mattered.
He had raised him.
Loved him.
Protected him.
And Liam had called him Dad.
Nothing could change that.
But the possibility that someone had manipulated his son's identity explained why Vanessa had been so interested in him.
It explained the medical records.
The trust.
The property.
Perhaps the money had been only one part of the plan.
Michael drove home.
Liam was waiting on the porch.
“Dad?”
Michael got out of the car.
“You okay?”
Michael smiled.
“Yes.”
“Did you find out something?”
Michael looked at his son.
“I'm finding things out.”
“About Mom?”
“About our family.”
Liam frowned.
“Are you going to tell me?”
“When you're older.”
Liam accepted that.
Michael walked inside with him.
That night, Michael searched the old family records.
He found a photograph of Sarah holding a newborn.
He had never seen it before.
On the back was a date.
The same date as Liam's birth.
Michael stared at the baby's face.
Then he noticed something.
A tiny crescent-shaped birthmark near the child's left ear.
Liam had the same mark.
Michael sat down.
The question was no longer whether the records had been altered.
The question was why.
