The investigators found Daniel two days later.
His full name was Daniel Mercer.
He had worked with Vanessa several years earlier at a property management company. Their relationship had ended badly, according to records, but they had remained in contact.
Michael had never heard his name.
That fact bothered him.
Vanessa had known Daniel before she met him, yet she had never mentioned him.
The investigator explained that Daniel had recently lost a large amount of money in a failed business venture.
“He had debts,” she said.
“How much?”
“Enough to create serious pressure.”
Michael rubbed his forehead.
“Was Vanessa helping him?”
“We don't know yet.”
The investigator placed a file on the table.
“But he was asking her questions about your finances.”
Michael opened it.
There were copies of messages.
Daniel had asked about Michael's business.
About his property.
About the trust.
About travel dates.
The questions were disguised as casual conversation.
Michael read one exchange and felt a wave of anger.
Daniel had asked whether Michael planned to sell the old family property.
Vanessa had answered that he wouldn't sell anything without Liam's agreement.
That made Michael stop.
The property had been left to him by his father.
It was valuable, but Michael had never considered selling it.
He had planned to keep it for Liam.
The investigator pointed to another message.
“Here.”
Michael read it.
Daniel had written that once Michael was “forced to reconsider his priorities,” things would become easier.
Michael looked up.
“What does that mean?”
“We're trying to establish that.”
He closed the file.
“Talk to Daniel.”
“We will.”
That evening, Michael drove to the hospital for Liam's follow-up appointment.
The doctor said the wounds were healing.
Some scars would remain.
Others would fade significantly.
“His physical recovery is going well,” she said.
Michael nodded.
“And emotionally?”
“He's improving.”
She looked at Liam, who was sitting beside his father.
“But he may have setbacks.”
Michael understood.
A child did not walk away from fear simply because the person who caused it was gone.
That night, Liam woke from a nightmare.
Michael found him sitting on the floor beside his bed.
“She came back.”
Michael knelt.
“She can't hurt you.”
Liam looked at him.
“I know.”
But his hands were trembling.
Michael sat beside him.
They stayed there until the shaking stopped.
The next morning, Michael received a call from Daniel's attorney.
Daniel wanted to speak.
Michael's lawyer advised him not to meet Daniel privately.
The interview happened at the police station.
Daniel looked different from the image Michael had imagined.
He was older than Michael expected, thin, with tired eyes and a nervous habit of rubbing his thumb across his palm.
“I didn't hurt the boy,” Daniel said immediately.
Michael stared at him.
“Then why were you discussing him?”
Daniel looked down.
“I knew Vanessa was having problems with him.”
“Problems?”
“She said he was unstable.”
Michael's jaw tightened.
“She lied.”
Daniel nodded.
“I know that now.”
Michael leaned forward.
“Why did you ask about my finances?”
Daniel remained silent.
The investigator repeated the question.
Finally, Daniel said, “Vanessa told me she would help me.”
“With what?”
“My debts.”
“And what did she want in return?”
Daniel looked at Michael.
“She said she could eventually get control of some money.”
“Whose?”
“Yours.”
Michael felt no surprise.
“Did she plan to kill me?”
Daniel's face changed.
“No.”
“Did she plan to make me look unstable?”
“I think so.”
Michael's pulse quickened.
“How?”
Daniel swallowed.
“She wanted you to believe you were losing control of your life.”
Michael stared at him.
“She wanted to make you doubt yourself.”
The words landed hard.
That was exactly what she had done.
She had told him Liam was difficult.
She had told him Liam exaggerated.
She had told him his son was becoming manipulative.
She had told him he needed to trust her judgment.
And Michael had listened.
Daniel continued.
“She said if you became convinced Liam was the source of all the problems, you'd send him away.”
Michael's eyes hardened.
“Where?”
“A residential school. Somewhere expensive.”
The investigator leaned forward.
“And then?”
Daniel looked down.
“She said once the boy was out of the house, you'd be easier to influence.”
Michael felt sick.
The plan had been more calculated than he had imagined.
But there was another piece.
“Why the iron?”
Daniel shook his head.
“I don't know.”
“Did she tell you about it?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Before you came home.”
Michael stared.
“What did she say?”
“She said she had found a way to make him stop talking.”
The room went silent.
Michael closed his eyes.
He could still hear Liam's whisper.
Please don't do it again.
Daniel had not used the iron himself.
But he had known.
And he had done nothing.
The investigator asked whether Daniel had evidence.
He provided copies of messages.
Some had been deleted from Vanessa's phone but remained in his backups.
One message was particularly disturbing.
Vanessa had written that Michael would soon be away again.
Daniel had replied that she needed to be careful.
She answered that Liam “already knew how to keep quiet.”
Michael stared at the words.
That sentence told him more than any confession could.
She had counted on his son's fear.
The investigation expanded.
Daniel agreed to testify.
Vanessa's attorney tried to argue that Daniel was blaming her to protect himself.
But the messages contradicted him.
The case against Vanessa grew stronger.
Meanwhile, Michael began repairing the practical parts of his life.
He changed every lock.
He reviewed financial accounts.
He hired additional security for the house.
He arranged counseling for Liam.
But he refused to let security become another form of fear.
The new house remained warm and ordinary.
Liam chose the movie on Friday nights.
He helped Michael cook.
They went to the park.
They bought ice cream after therapy appointments.
Small things became important.
One Saturday, Liam asked if they could visit the old house.
Michael hesitated.
“Why?”
“I want to see my room.”
The house was still part of the investigation, but access had been permitted for retrieving personal belongings.
Michael agreed.
They entered together.
The air smelled stale.
Dust had settled on the furniture.
Liam stood at the bottom of the staircase.
Michael waited.
“You don't have to go up.”
“I want to.”
They climbed slowly.
Liam stopped outside the laundry room.
He looked at the door.
Then he reached for Michael's hand.
“Stay with me.”
“I will.”
They opened it together.
The room looked ordinary.
That was what frightened Michael most.
Nothing about it revealed what had happened.
Liam looked at the floor.
Then he pointed.
“There.”
Michael crouched.
A faint mark remained near the wall.
The melted toy was gone, collected as evidence.
But the mark was still there.
Liam looked at him.
“She told me nobody would believe me.”
Michael's voice was steady.
“I believe you.”
The boy nodded.
They left the room.
Before they reached the stairs, Liam stopped.
“Dad?”
“Yes?”
“Can we leave now?”
Michael squeezed his hand.
“Yes.”
Outside, Liam took a deep breath.
Michael watched him.
The boy looked toward the house one last time.
Then he turned away.
For Michael, that simple movement felt like the beginning of something.
Not forgetting.
Not pretending.
Leaving.
