The folder changed everything.
Michael spent the next several hours reviewing the evidence with the investigator and prosecutor.
They did not let him remove anything.
Every page was photographed and catalogued.
Emma had been thorough.
She had documented dates.
Names.
Property searches.
Bank inquiries.
Employee records.
There were notes beside several documents.
Some were only a few words long.
Others filled entire pages.
One phrase appeared repeatedly.
Protect Liam.
Michael touched the edge of the paper.
He had never seen Emma this frightened.
The investigator asked whether Emma had ever told him about Vanessa.
“No.”
“Not even indirectly?”
Michael thought.
“There was one conversation.”
He told her about Emma warning him that he trusted people too easily.
The investigator wrote it down.
Then Michael remembered something else.
Emma had wanted him to change the locks.
He had dismissed it as anxiety.
She had insisted that someone had been inside the house while they were away.
Michael's stomach tightened.
“Did she tell you why?”
“No.”
The investigator looked at the documents.
“She may have believed someone had access to the house.”
Michael remembered the old security system.
The one Vanessa had later replaced.
He had never asked why.
He had assumed it was outdated.
Now he wondered whether the old system contained evidence.
The investigator checked archived records.
There was a possibility.
The system had automatically backed up certain access logs to an external server.
They requested the records.
While they waited, Michael returned home.
Liam was doing homework at the kitchen table.
He looked up.
“Dad?”
“Yeah?”
“Are you okay?”
Michael sat beside him.
“I had a long day.”
“Is it about Mom?”
Michael nodded.
Liam put down his pencil.
“Did you find something?”
Michael hesitated.
“Yes.”
“Bad?”
“Some of it.”
Liam was quiet.
Then he asked, “Are they going to hurt us?”
Michael took his hand.
“No.”
He wanted to promise more.
He wanted to say nobody could ever hurt them again.
But he knew better than to make promises he could not guarantee.
Instead, he said, “I'm going to do everything I can to keep you safe.”
Liam nodded.
That was enough.
The next morning, the old security logs arrived.
There were entries from the weeks before Emma's death.
Several showed access to the house at hours when nobody should have been there.
Michael stared at the dates.
One entry occurred three nights before Emma died.
Another happened the night before.
The access code belonged to a former employee.
Michael did not recognize the name.
The investigator searched it.
The employee had worked for the property management company where Vanessa and Daniel had been employed.
Michael felt cold.
“Was he connected to Vanessa?”
“Yes.”
“Where is he now?”
The investigator paused.
“Dead.”
Michael stared at her.
“When?”
“Six months after Emma's death.”
The man had died of what appeared to be an overdose.
But the investigator said they would review that death as well.
Michael sat back.
The number of coincidences had become too large.
Yet every new discovery still needed proof.
He understood that.
The prosecutor returned later with another development.
“Vanessa has requested to speak with you.”
Michael immediately refused.
“You don't have to,” the prosecutor said.
“Is she offering information?”
“She says she wants to explain why she married you.”
Michael stared at the phone.
“Did she say anything else?”
“She claims Daniel manipulated her.”
Michael almost laughed.
“Of course.”
But something about the request bothered him.
If Vanessa wanted to explain herself, perhaps she knew the investigation had uncovered more than she expected.
His attorney advised him not to speak with her directly.
Michael agreed.
Instead, investigators arranged a formal interview.
Vanessa's first statement was carefully controlled.
She admitted knowing Daniel.
She admitted that they had discussed Michael's finances.
She denied planning to hurt Liam.
She claimed the iron had been used only as a threat.
Then the investigator showed her the notebook.
Vanessa's expression changed.
She insisted it had been taken out of context.
Then they showed her the photographs from the storage unit.
She became silent.
Finally, they showed her the old photograph of herself with Daniel.
Vanessa looked at it for several seconds.
Then she said something that made the investigator stop.
“Emma wasn't supposed to know.”
The room went quiet.
The investigator asked her to repeat it.
Vanessa realized her mistake.
“I mean…”
But the damage was done.
She had admitted Emma knew.
The interview continued for hours.
Vanessa finally acknowledged that she had been involved with Daniel before meeting Michael.
She claimed they had only discussed money.
But when investigators asked about Emma's death, she refused to answer.
That refusal mattered.
The prosecutor later told Michael that the investigation had changed significantly.
They were no longer looking only at child abuse and financial fraud.
They were examining a possible connection to Emma's death.
Michael sat in silence.
He wanted justice.
But he also wanted to protect Liam from becoming trapped inside the past.
That afternoon, he picked his son up from school.
Liam climbed into the car.
“Can we get ice cream?”
Michael smiled.
“Absolutely.”
They stopped at a small shop.
Liam chose chocolate.
Michael chose coffee.
They sat outside.
For ten minutes, neither spoke about courtrooms or investigators.
They talked about a science project.
A teacher who wore funny ties.
A dog Liam wanted.
Michael laughed.
It felt almost normal.
Then Liam asked quietly, “Do you think Mom knew?”
Michael looked at him.
“Knew what?”
“That something bad was coming.”
Michael swallowed.
“She knew she was worried about something.”
“Did she try to protect me?”
“Yes.”
Liam looked down at his ice cream.
“Then she was brave.”
Michael nodded.
“She was.”
The boy smiled.
That night, Michael returned to the storage unit with investigators.
They had discovered one final compartment inside an old cabinet.
Inside was a small digital recorder.
It contained several files.
The first was Emma.
The second was Grace.
The third was a man's voice.
Michael recognized it immediately.
Daniel.
He was speaking to Vanessa.
The recording was dated weeks before Emma's death.
Daniel asked whether Emma had discovered anything.
Vanessa answered that she was “handling it.”
Daniel asked what would happen if Emma went to Michael.
Vanessa said Emma would not get the chance.
Michael's blood ran cold.
The recording continued.
Daniel asked whether Vanessa was sure.
Her answer was clear.
“She trusts him too much. She won't believe her.”
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
The investigator looked at Michael.
“We need to review the original recording for authenticity.”
Michael nodded.
There was no question anymore that Vanessa had been planning something.
But the most important question remained unanswered.
What exactly had happened to Emma?
And had the accident been an accident at all?
