The accident report had always seemed straightforward.
Rain.
A wet road.
A sudden collision.
No witnesses who could explain what happened before the impact.
Michael had accepted it because there had been nothing else to hold on to.
Now the investigators reopened every detail.
They obtained the original police photographs.
The damaged vehicle.
The road conditions.
The tire marks.
The emergency call.
Then they found something that had been overlooked.
Emma's car had stopped briefly several minutes before the crash.
The location was unusual.
She had pulled into a small roadside parking area.
A camera from a nearby business had captured the car.
Investigators reviewed the footage.
Emma was not alone.
A dark vehicle stopped behind her.
It remained there for several minutes.
Then both cars left.
Michael watched the recording.
“Can you identify it?”
“Not yet.”
The vehicle's license plate was partially obscured.
But the investigators found another camera farther down the road.
This one showed the vehicle turning onto the same route as Emma.
They traced the registration.
The vehicle belonged to a company.
That company had been connected to Daniel.
Michael stared at the report.
“Does that mean he caused the crash?”
“No.”
The investigator's answer was immediate.
“But it places him near her shortly before the accident.”
That was enough to justify further investigation.
Daniel was questioned again.
He denied following Emma.
Then investigators showed him the footage.
His expression changed.
He eventually admitted that he had met Emma that evening.
“What did you talk about?”
“Business.”
“That's not what she believed.”
Daniel looked down.
“She confronted me.”
“About Vanessa?”
He nodded.
“What did she know?”
“She knew we had been looking into Michael's property.”
Michael felt his hands tighten.
“What happened next?”
Daniel said they argued.
Emma told him she would tell Michael everything.
Daniel claimed he left before Emma did.
The investigators asked whether he had followed her.
He said no.
The vehicle footage suggested otherwise.
But the case still lacked the crucial moment.
There was no direct evidence that Daniel caused the collision.
Then investigators found a second problem.
The road report had noted a mechanical issue with Emma's car.
A brake line had been damaged.
Not worn.
Damaged.
Michael sat motionless when he heard it.
“Why wasn't that investigated?”
The investigator looked uncomfortable.
“The original report treated it as part of the collision.”
“Could the collision have caused the damage?”
“Possibly.”
“Could the damage have caused the collision?”
“Possibly.”
Michael stared at the floor.
The distinction was everything.
A mechanical failure could explain why Emma lost control.
And someone could have caused the failure.
The investigation moved quickly.
The vehicle was recovered from a storage yard.
Modern forensic testing could reveal details that had not been available years earlier.
Michael tried not to expect anything.
He failed.
Days later, the result arrived.
The damage to the brake line was consistent with deliberate tampering.
Michael closed his eyes.
Emma had not simply been unlucky.
Someone had interfered with her car.
The prosecutor confirmed that the evidence was being reviewed for criminal charges.
Michael asked one question.
“Was Vanessa involved?”
“We don't know yet.”
Daniel was now the central focus.
But there was still no evidence tying Vanessa directly to the car.
Then the investigators returned to the old property management records.
A work vehicle assigned to Daniel had been logged out that evening.
The destination field was blank.
The vehicle had returned after midnight.
Michael felt sick.
The pieces were converging.
Daniel had met Emma.
Daniel's vehicle had followed her.
Emma's brakes had been tampered with.
Vanessa had been working with Daniel.
And Emma had warned Michael before she died.
The prosecutor told Michael they would need to prove who physically damaged the vehicle.
The evidence was strong but incomplete.
Michael understood.
He had learned the difference between suspicion and truth.
Meanwhile, Liam's therapy continued.
He had begun sleeping through most nights.
His nightmares were less frequent.
One evening, he asked Michael whether they could plant a tree.
“What kind?”
“One like Mom liked.”
Michael knew immediately.
The tree in Emma's favorite photograph had been a young maple.
They went to a nursery.
Liam chose a small tree.
They planted it in the backyard.
Michael held the trunk steady while Liam pushed soil around the roots.
“Will it grow?”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“A long time.”
Liam smiled.
“Good.”
Michael understood.
Some things were worth waiting for.
The next week, Vanessa's attorney requested another meeting.
This time, Vanessa offered information.
She wanted immunity from certain charges.
The prosecutor refused.
But they listened.
Vanessa admitted she had known Daniel for years.
She admitted they had discussed Michael before she met him.
She admitted she had researched his finances.
Then she made a claim that stunned everyone.
“I never wanted Emma dead.”
The prosecutor asked what she meant.
Vanessa said Daniel had told her he would “take care of the problem.”
She claimed she did not know what he intended.
The prosecutor asked why she had continued working with him.
Vanessa said she was afraid.
Michael struggled to believe her.
But the statement gave investigators another avenue.
They questioned Daniel.
He denied telling Vanessa he would harm Emma.
Then they confronted him with the recording.
He became silent.
The prosecutor played the section where Vanessa said Emma would not get the chance to tell Michael.
Daniel's attorney objected.
The recording was authenticated.
Daniel eventually admitted that he had sabotaged the car.
But he insisted Vanessa had not ordered it.
She had only told him that Emma was becoming a threat.
The distinction mattered legally.
Emotionally, it mattered less to Michael.
Vanessa had brought Daniel into their lives.
She had known what he was capable of.
And she had done nothing to protect Emma.
Michael returned home that night and sat beside the maple tree.
Liam came outside.
“Why are you sitting there?”
“Thinking.”
“About Mom?”
“Yes.”
Liam sat beside him.
After a while, he said, “I remember she used to sing.”
Michael smiled.
“She did.”
“What song?”
Michael told him.
Liam tried to hum it.
His voice was soft and imperfect.
Michael listened.
For the first time in months, remembering Emma did not feel like reopening a wound.
It felt like bringing someone home.
Then his phone rang.
It was the prosecutor.
“We have enough evidence to charge Daniel in connection with Emma's death.”
Michael closed his eyes.
“And Vanessa?”
“She will face additional charges based on her own conduct and what she knew.”
Michael looked at Liam.
The boy was still humming.
Michael did not tell him that night.
He wanted one more evening where the past did not have to enter the room.
But the next morning, something happened that changed everything again.
A detective arrived at the house carrying a sealed envelope.
It had been recovered from Daniel's storage locker.
Inside was a document Vanessa had never mentioned.
A handwritten agreement.
It appeared to have been created before Michael met Vanessa.
And beside Daniel's signature was hers.
The agreement concerned one thing.
Michael's family.
