PART 8 – Emma’s Old Note Raised a Terrifying Possibility, and Michael Had to Discover Whether Vanessa’s Plan Began Long Before Their Marriage

Michael barely touched breakfast the next morning.

The note lay on the kitchen table.

He had read it so many times that the handwriting seemed burned into his mind.

Emma had written about being careful.

She had mentioned people around Liam.

She had said she was uncomfortable with someone who seemed too interested in their family.

But she had not written a name.

Michael searched his memories.

Who had been around them before Vanessa?

There were neighbors.

Friends.

Business associates.

School parents.

Emma's colleagues.

A few people from the property management company.

And Daniel.

The name surfaced immediately.

Michael called the investigator.

“I found something.”

He explained the note.

The investigator came that afternoon.

She examined the handwriting and the date.

“Do you know who Emma might have been referring to?”

“No.”

“Could it have been Vanessa?”

“No. Emma had never met her.”

The investigator nodded.

“Then we need to look at the people Emma knew before her death.”

Michael searched through Emma's old phone backups.

Most of the data had been preserved.

Messages.

Emails.

Photos.

Appointments.

At first, nothing stood out.

Then Michael found a conversation between Emma and Grace.

It was from several weeks before Emma's accident.

Emma had asked Grace whether she had noticed anyone following their routine.

Grace had replied that she had not.

Michael's pulse quickened.

He called Grace.

She agreed to meet him.

When she arrived, Michael showed her the note.

Grace read it slowly.

“I remember this.”

Michael stared at her.

“What do you remember?”

“Emma was worried.”

“About who?”

Grace looked uncomfortable.

“She never said.”

“Please.”

Grace sighed.

“She told me a man had approached her.”

“What man?”

“I don't know his name.”

“What did he look like?”

Grace thought.

“Tall. Dark hair. Always wore a jacket, even when it was warm.”

Michael's mind went blank.

“Did she describe why he approached her?”

Grace nodded.

“He asked questions about Liam.”

Michael felt the room change.

“What kind of questions?”

“Whether Liam was adopted. Whether he had any inheritance. Whether Michael had family money.”

Michael stared at her.

“Did Emma know Daniel?”

Grace shook her head.

“Not personally.”

But that didn't mean anything.

Michael showed her a photograph of Daniel.

Grace studied it.

Then her expression changed.

“I think that's him.”

Michael stopped breathing for a moment.

“You're sure?”

“Not completely.”

She pointed at the screen.

“He looks older now.”

The investigator was called.

The possibility was enough to reopen an older line of inquiry.

They checked Daniel's whereabouts around the time Emma died.

He had an alibi for the accident itself.

But he had been in the same city.

Michael asked whether the police believed Daniel had caused the accident.

The investigator shook her head.

“We have no evidence of that.”

Michael exhaled.

“Then what are you saying?”

“That we need to separate suspicion from proof.”

Michael understood.

He had spent months living with the consequences of assumptions.

He would not repeat Vanessa's mistake in reverse.

Still, the timing was disturbing.

Daniel had known about Liam before Vanessa entered Michael's life.

He had researched the family.

He had asked about money.

And Emma had been concerned about a man asking similar questions.

The investigators dug deeper.

They found that Daniel had once worked for a company that handled property records.

That gave him access to information about Michael's family holdings.

He could have learned about the trust.

He could have learned about the property.

He could have learned about the insurance.

Michael sat in his attorney's office as the pieces were laid out.

“Was Vanessa involved then?”

“We don't know.”

“But they knew each other later.”

“Yes.”

Michael looked at the table.

“Maybe she didn't choose me.”

His attorney raised an eyebrow.

“Maybe they both chose my family.”

That possibility was frightening.

But there was still no proof that Vanessa had known Daniel before their relationship.

The investigation continued.

Meanwhile, Liam's life was becoming more normal.

He returned to school.

His teacher reported that he was participating again.

He joined an art club.

He began laughing more.

One afternoon, he came home with paint on his sleeve.

Michael looked at him.

“What happened?”

“We made planets.”

“You've got blue paint on your face.”

Liam touched his cheek.

“Oh.”

Michael smiled.

“Leave it.”

Liam grinned.

It was an ordinary moment.

Michael treasured it.

That night, after Liam went to bed, the investigator called.

“We found something.”

Michael sat down.

“What?”

“An old hotel record.”

His heart tightened.

“Whose?”

“Daniel's.”

The investigator explained that Daniel had stayed at a hotel near Michael's home shortly before Emma's accident.

The date was significant.

“What was he doing there?”

“We don't know.”

Michael asked whether there were surveillance records.

“Not anymore.”

The hotel had changed ownership.

But there was an old registration card.

Daniel had used a different surname.

Michael stared at the copy.

The name meant nothing.

Then the investigator explained why it mattered.

The same surname appeared in one of Vanessa's old employment records.

Michael felt a chill.

“Are you saying they were connected before?”

“Possibly.”

That night, Michael did not sleep.

He sat beside the window, watching headlights move across the street.

He thought about Emma.

Her warning.

Her note.

The strange man.

The accident.

Vanessa.

Daniel.

The trust.

The iron.

Too many pieces were connected.

Yet one crucial piece remained missing.

Why had Emma written the note?

Michael searched through her belongings again.

He opened an old desk drawer he had avoided since her death.

Inside were receipts, pens, photographs, and a small key.

He did not recognize it.

There was a number written on a paper beside it.

214.

Michael remembered an old storage facility.

Emma had rented a unit there years earlier.

He had never asked why.

The next morning, he took the key to the facility.

The manager checked the records.

The unit was still registered under Emma's name.

Michael stood outside the door.

He hesitated.

He had spent nearly a year avoiding places that held too much of her.

Now he needed to open one.

Inside were boxes.

Christmas decorations.

Old clothes.

Documents.

Photographs.

And a sealed envelope.

Michael opened it.

There were copies of property records.

A list of names.

And several photographs.

One showed Daniel.

Another showed Vanessa.

Michael's hands went numb.

They were standing together.

Years before Michael had ever met Vanessa.

On the back of the photograph was a date.

Michael stared at it.

Then he found another photograph.

Emma had circled Daniel's face in red ink.

Underneath, she had written one sentence.

Michael read it twice.

Then a third time.

The discovery did not prove that Vanessa had caused Emma's death.

It did not prove Daniel had either.

But it proved something Michael had not been prepared to learn.

Vanessa had known Daniel long before she entered Michael's home.

And Emma had known enough to be afraid.

Michael called the investigator.

“I found the photographs.”

“Where are you?”

“At Emma's storage unit.”

“Don't touch anything else.”

Michael looked around the dusty room.

“I already did.”

“Then stop now. We'll send someone.”

He ended the call.

For several minutes, he stood alone among the boxes.

Then his phone vibrated.

It was an unknown number.

Michael answered.

Nobody spoke.

“Hello?”

Silence.

Then a man's voice came through.

“You should stop digging.”

Michael's entire body went rigid.

“Who is this?”

The caller breathed softly.

“You've already lost enough.”

The line went dead.

Michael stared at the phone.

He looked toward the storage unit door.

For the first time since Vanessa's arrest, he felt something he had not felt in months.

Fear.

Not for himself.

For Liam.

And suddenly the past was no longer finished with them.
